"like, the god of the sea?"in the course of the past two days of patrolling and getting ramen with yoshida hirofumi, you had learned a few things.
one, he was actually part time school student along with being a devil hunter, so the apartment was covered in pointless school notes, fat textbooks, and missing homework.
two, he was also a huge romantic and had a lot of sappy romance manga littered all over the house which despite your complaints, were all in good taste and have actually been quite fun for you to read. this also came with the downside that he often tried to rizz you up to no avail. in fact, sometimes you found things he said in the manga around the house and the more that happened, the more you saw him as a huge dork instead of a devil hunter.
three, he was contracted with the octopus devil. you still didn't know what he gave in exchange, but you had your theories from the beady black soulless eyes he had.
and that was all you had in your mental notebook for him so far. along with a few other tasteless complaints like the weed you find all over the house and the countless lone socks you've been discovering. you still can't forget death running around with his underwear on her arm like a flag. he almost jumped off the balcony.
presently, you were on patrol in what seemed like a rich neighborhood near the beach. it was the only patrol route that you had to take the bus to get to, because it was an hour and a half away. the goal was to keep an eye out for the sea devil who had been recently spotted in the area and was injured by civilians devil hunters. makima thought yoshida and his devil were perfect for the job and you were mostly here as a trial run. you pondered the strength of a sea devil. you were actually quite scared of the sea. well, you used to be. now you dont need air so the thought of drowning isnt so scary. and your pain receptors don't work anymore so theres no fear of any sea creatures either.
as the thought permeated you noticed a large wooden beach house with a missing door. you hadn't realized but at the sight of the house you stopped moving completely. "hey, yoshida-sir." you called and ignored the way he rolled his eyes and turned to face you. "kill the formalites, already. what is it?" you pointed at the house with the missing door. "why don't we check that out?" he turned to the house before looking back at you. "so suddenly? why-" but he stopped himself as he glanced at your eyes. he quickly closed his mouth and made his way to the house as you scrambled to keep up from behind. your brows furrowed as you watched his back.
that was weird
you had no time to ponder it though, because before you knew it the two of you had walked through the doorless house and it was as if you had left earth. household items floated around the space mysteriously and you noticed the room was filled with ankle deep water that you couldn't see from outside the house until now. a few fish swam through and around your legs but swam away from yoshida with haste. you couldn't help the laugh that escaped you as he glared.
"don't laugh, asshole. it's just because of my devil- what's with that face?" you had smacked a hand over your face with horror and stepped back in fear. the water behind yoshida had swelled into a serpent-like creature and opened its maw as if to eat yoshida. you reached for your hip and unsheathed a small kitchen knife, slitting across your palm as the blood dripped into the water before turning black and forming a black inky hand with claws. grabbing his tie with your left arm, you used the reapers right one to grab the serpent like a snake before you defang it. it snarled and thrashed before yoshida wrapped an arm around your neck and turned, summing the octopus to knock the fangs out of its mouth. it fell limp into the water and disappeared. you sighed in relief and yoshida wrapped your hand as you flexed the clawed one. "i can't imagine that's all the fight the sea devil could put up, there's gotta be something we're missing." he nodded in agreement and devised the two of you should split up and explore the two floors of the house.
you searched room after room downstairs but came up with nothing of interest, only schools of fish swimming door to door and one room full of frogs. you opened the final door at the end of the hallway and noticed a lump on the floor. you pulled everything out of the way and it revealed a girl. she had black hair that split around her eyes with a cute chunk of strands in the middle going down to her nose. she actually looked to be russian which you found a bit interesting. there were a pair of tightly wound handcuffs around her wrist that were seemingly made of water. you cut them open with your clawed hand and picked her up bridal style before you noticed the floor. the water was closer to your thighs now. you wandered around the bottom floor with the unconscious girl for a bit just to confirm your theory and sure enough by then the water had reached your hips. the water level was rising within the house.
you made your way up the steps cautiously as your lower half was totally drenched. yoshida was leaving a room as you made it to the top and he walked to meet you. "who's the girl? and why are you so wet.. did you fall?" there was a resigned judgement on his face and you glared. damn, rude much? "no i didn't fall, asshole. that's actually why i came up here. it looks like the water level is gradually rising." he nodded. "interesting. at least you found something." he spoke in reference to the new person in the room. you smiled. "yeah she's quite pretty, isn't she?" he shrugged "sure, but, not my type." you pretended to miss the way he grinned at you with a sly expression after that statement. "did you find anything?" he shook his head. "no, only a little statue to poseidon in one of the bedrooms." you tilted your head, noticing the water had completely submerged the bottom floor by that point. "like, the god of the sea?" he nodded and waved you over so you followed him into the bedroom, setting the girl down on the bed and going to the statue. you clutched it in the reapers hand and squeezed before dropping the dust remains into the water. not long after the house drained and everything was back to normal. "no sea devil, i suppose. i guess you could say this was a trap." you shook your head and looked back at the girl on the bed, who now looked at you with cunning green eyes and a tiny little smile. "this wasn't a trap, it was a prison." the girl reached for the pin on her neck and you were quick about grabbing yoshida and pushing him into the nearby closet. just as you reinforced your body with the reapers flesh, a mind boggling explosion ruptured the entire building. the entire first floor giving out and causing the whole house to fall in as yoshida's tentacles guarded you both from the debris falling.
oh wow. you heaved for a breath through pained gasps. suddenly i feel alive again. the skin on your back and the back of your arms flaked off. your body laid weakly on the floor as you strained your ears to hear your buddies voice. weird, so weird. why can i suddenly feel? why do i need to breathe? so badly. i need to breathe. you could only whimper to him as he panicked. "oh god, what the fuck? why'd you do that?! are you a complete fucking idiot?" you were glad you couldn't see what he was seeing, because it hurt like a mother fucker. your blood bubbled from the heat of the explosion. "what- is it. what is left?" you asked, hoping the question made sense to him. "your back, it's gone- it's." he swallowed thickly like he was fighting the urge to vomit. the thought only then crossed your mind. did it hurt because death was gone? is your body alive because death wasn't?
suddenly there was a tugging on your consciousness. a tugging into the darkness, but that tug was familiar and you couldn't help but give in. you wanted to greet death with open arms, whether that was the devil or your fate.
"no sea devil, i suppose."
