"is now a good time to tell you i can't drive?"

you were partially aware as you dashed through halls and up the stairs to the rooftop that you were likely walking into a trap. given the behavior of the bitter scientist, you had your doubts about whether or not this trail would lead to an escape route or not.

regardless, when the roof hatch came into view you couldn't help considering it your saving grace. even though you knew your freedom was all but guaranteed. you were honestly running from the decisions you'd have to make once you escaped from here. that didn't matter right now, though, not now that you were on the roof in the pouring rain.

no calling on sora then, that's a bummer. doesn't matter though, you had yumi's powers. besides, it's not like jumping off the roof would kill you.

"hey, over here!" a familiar feminine voice called from somewhere on the roof. you glanced, noticing the female scientist from earlier who behaved with such deep gratitude of you. "i waited for you, the fire exits right here! we can get to my car from there, i'll drive you somewhere safe!" she shouted, waving you over. you eyed her skeptically as you jogged over.

"why?" you asked, leaning down over her as she leaned against the roofs ledge. "because what we did to you wasn't right. you helped me regardless of that, i owe you so much more than just my life for not just your mercy, but your willingness to forgive." you scoffed but smiled. "i don't forgive you, but maybe i will after this." she smiled sadly and stood, getting in a position to kick the ladder of the fire escape down.

a gunshot rang through the rain pounding on the rooftop beneath your feet. she lost her footing, bullet piercing her ankle as she released her grip on the roofs edge and nearly fell. with hardly a moment to react, you grasped her hand. it was raining, but you wouldn't give her the chance to slip. inky black ropes stabbed their way through your skin, wrapping around her wrist tightly. binding her arm to yours to keep her from falling. "fuck!" she screamed, hissing and thrashing from the pain.

you glanced back, sato holding a smoking pistol and smiling down at you menacingly. his goal was to play the villain so that you could play hero. you didn't think he'd shoot her, though. "damnit, stop moving!" you shouted to the girl below. "it's gonna be okay, i'm not gonna let you fall! just trust me, we'll patch up your wound when we land!" she sighed, her thrashing subsiding as she wailed. she was crying, hyperventilating. clearly the woman had too much pretty privilege to have dealt with suffering, her reactions to the injury being almost childlike.

"wait, when we land?" she echoes as she calms down, giving you a shocked look. on cue, you threw yourself off the side of the roof, reinforcing your legs with black matter and flipping her into your arms bridal style.

the force of the fall caused a loud slam to echo through the vicinity, a tremor following it. there's a small crater beneath your feet and the woman is in shock now. nearly unconscious. "oh, hey now.." you rest her gently in the crater, tapping her cheek. "can't fall asleep on me till we get to your car. here." you rip off the clean bandages from under your shirt, wrapping her leg and stunting the wound to prevent the bullet from sloshing around.

she taps her lab coat pocket and when you fish around in it, you consider yourself lucky when you come across her honda civic's keys. "Is now a good time to tell you I can't drive?" you ask, a teasing tone as you try to keep her attention off her wound. another gunshot rings through the air and you hiss when it pierces your shoulder.

okay, your show was convincing enough. stop shooting me!

you suck in a breath as you dodge another bullet, reinforcing your skin while you unlock the car with the keys. the sound of a beep alerts you of where to go, and after sprinting from behind cover to cover- you quickly load the girl into the backseat of her car. she's hardly conscious, whimpering and thrashing against the seats. "it's okay, it's okay." you whisper soothingly, but she only wails louder when a bullet hits the roof of her car. she clambers up, pinning herself to the corner of the car seats in a panic and covering her head with her hands.

"listen!" you shout, putting your hands on her face to force her eyes to meet yours. a gentle brush of your fingers keeps her focus on you and you lightly slap her cheek right after. "i'm not going to let anything happen to you, okay? trust me." you reassure, and she nods with a sniffle. the next bullet to hit the car connects after you shut the backseat door, scampering into the front seat while applying pressure to your wounded shoulder. you twist the keys in the ignition, the hum of the engine roaring to life.

it can't be much harder than driving in gta, right...?

you hope it isn't as you step on the break and shift the gear to reverse, another bullet hits the car and you hush the panicked scientist once more, keeping up a meaningless conversation with her as you drive straight over the curb behind you, the car messily backing into the street. "shit..." you mumble. thankfully, the woman is more afraid of the bullets piercing the vehicle than your inability to drive, so she remains unfazed by your wheels rising over the curb. "hey, do you have your phone?" you ask, and she whispers a quiet no. you curse to yourself, not a clue on where to go now that you're actively driving. she suddenly peers over the cars console, pointing to the screen in the center of the driver and passengers seat. "built in gps." she mumbles, and you suddenly remember that you're in the future.

man that is too fucking cool.

you quickly type in the u.a. high school and the address immediately pops up, you select it and are pleasantly surprised to find out it's closer than any nearby hospital. thankfully, you can kill two birds with one stone. you enter the address and sigh heavily, the sound of thunder and rain the only thing that accompanies you as you make your bumpy trip down the roads and to the high-school.

finally, you were free.

"i'm not gonna let anything happen to you, okay? trust me."
