"Hope, would you like something to eat?" the stranger's soft voice asked.

Carefully, Hope straightened up and nodded. He reached for the food and took a hearty bite into it. A delicious taste flooded his taste sensors. Heaven that's delicious. Again he felt a familiar pull.

Sereph smiled. "This is your favorite food," he said, pleased to see the happy expression on his mate's face. Hope was thinner than he had last seen him. He seemed to have lost a large part of his muscles, which he had trained in his time with Lyric and Nix.

Hope felt his starved body eagerly consuming the food, as he had done for the past two weeks. He enjoyed eating everything he was served. "Thank you," he said. He felt a soft hand on his cheek and turned his head to his captor.

"You don't have to say thank you."

Why is his voice so full of... affection? He wasn't used to being addressed in this way. He also seemed to know about Hope's blindness. Is that why he kidnapped me? Because I'm an easy victim?

"I'll continue now if it's okay with you." A short pause, then Sereph picked up on the last thing he had said. "You were already in Hell for almost a month before I found you at the auction. I took you with me and you settled in here. Little by little, we were able to get closer."

Hope listened suspiciously. What happened during that month? Am I really thinking about this now? It's almost as if I believe... No.

"You are my heart. Each demon has a second half, which is destined for him. When he finds them, they make an indestructible covenant, become one."

"Something like a soul mate? And a marriage?" asked Hope.

"A soulmate might be a fitting description in your language, but marriage is not. It's something much deeper that can't be undone," Sereph explained. "When you find your heart, it's like breathing for the first time. You feel a deep peace and a void is filled that no one else has been able to fill before. You become whole. But it also has disadvantages. When one is separated from one's heart or loses it, an appalling emptiness is formed. You follow your heart, because no one can bear this emptiness."

These words struck Hope deeply. The thoughts that had been tormenting him all the time came to the surface.

Again the loud beeping sounded. All he wanted was to continue gliding in this calm. No noise, no pain, just peace. Then why did he feel such pain in his chest? Where does this emptiness come from? I don't want that.

"Hope, do you have chest pain?"

Hope shook his head, which made the father exhale in relief. "No. But something is missing. I lost something," he said, and suddenly Hope felt hot tears running down his cheeks. What have I lost? What's missing?

Hot tears ran down Hope's cheeks. He didn't want that anymore, he didn't want to listen to him any more. It hurt too much. "Please leave me alone," he sobbed. He had to be alone.

The demon hesitated, but then stood up. "Please call me if you need anything. I will come immediately." Then, with a heavy heart, he left Hope alone.

Hope lay trembling on the bed, curled up in the blankets. It took him a while to calm down. I don't want those feelings. I have to get out of here. He had to flee – that was the decision he made for himself. I need to concentrate. Then he let his rational thinking take control. He pushed all emotions aside and locked them in a chest inside. He began to plan his escape systematically. Eventually he went to the door and opened it a crack. With his click sonar he scanned the surroundings. It was a long corridor. At a certain interval, he heard footsteps. They are on patrol. Soon he recognized the pattern and his head gave him the escape route.
