Do you know how long a second is? One second is a heartbeat, one second lasts about two hundred bee's wing beats, one second is what it takes a car driving 31 mph to cover a distance of about 42 feet and 8 inches.

But do you know what will take another second? The moment when your entire life changes. But it wasn't the bee that had been caught by the car. It was me who had stood within said 42 feet and 8 inches in that exact second. If I had been a bee, I might have managed to dodge, but I had no wings and was not a bee.

But after that second, I knew what flying was. When the blue sky stretched before my eyes, I knew that wasn't right. This very sky was the last thing I saw, because from then on, my world was colored in darkness. Black was the only color I still knew.

Within a second, the black jaguar, which had turned without braking, hit the body of a boy who had walked across the crosswalk. The driver simply hadn't paid attention and couldn't react.

The boy was caught, flew into the windshield. Bones broke and glass splintered. The splinters bored into his skin and tore it open. The car braked, the tires squeaked and slid. When the car slowed down abruptly, it tore the injured man directly from the front of the car back onto the road, where he rolled a few more feet. Then it was quiet.

A horrified scream echoed from the left and panicked the driver got out. The ambulance was called and first responders tried their best. The boy didn't notice any of this. Because he had slipped into unconsciousness with an image of the blue sky.

He was in a coma for several months, numerous operations were necessary to straighten his bones and close the cuts on his body. Deep scars on his chest and back remained. It was a miracle that he wasn't already dead, which no one could explain.

Then finally came salvation. He took a deep breath and finally opened his eyes after all this time. His adoptive mother sat next to his bed and tears flowed as he awoke from his long sleep. Finally he was back with them. But when he asked her a question she had never wanted to hear, something died in her. He spoke only five small words, one sentence.

"Mum, why is everything black?"
