🦋Chapter 6: Agent Daniel Sousa🦋
"The agent's life...must be exciting." Coulson commented, breaking the silence.
"It fills the days. Lot of threats out there." Daniel mentioned.
"Russians." Coulson offered.
"And others. Lying low, biding time. I take it science doesn't leave much time for a personal life either." Daniel said.
Coulson furrowed his brows. "I don't follow."
"No ring on your finger." Daniel pointed out.
"There was someone. I couldn't stick around long enough to make it last." Coulson confessed. "How 'bout you?"
"Similar story." Daniel replied before glancing over at me. "What about you, Miss...?"
"Reyes, Mariana Reyes." I informed him. "And there was someone...a man I loved dearly, but he was taken from me before I could tell him how I felt."
Daniel's face fell, giving me a sympathetic look. "I'm terribly sorry."
I offered a nod and forced a small smile, grateful to hear his words. Fortunately, Daniel changed the subject. "Don't you think it's about time you show me what all this song and dance is for?"
"Sorry, can't do it. Stark's eyes only." Coulson informed him, placing a hand on the case.
"Stark's not gonna be at the drop, you know. It'll be his man in L.A." Daniel replied.
Coulson shrugged. "That's too bad. I was hoping to meet him."
"You worked on this for Howard and you've never met him?" Daniel asked in disbelief.
I grimaced. Coulson, you better think of something and quickly too before he sees through our facade. Fortunately, Coulson knew what to say.
"He sent a few encouraging messages to the lab." Coulson elaborated.
"Sounds like him." Daniel confirmed with a nod and eye roll.
"What's he like?" Coulson inquired.
"A pompous ass." Daniel answered.
Like father, like son I suppose. I snorted. "That definitely sounds like him."
Daniel looked over at me, taken back. He raised an eyebrow. "You've met him?"
Coulson grimaced. I then realized my mistake. No problem, I'll bluff my way out of this. Before I was a spy, I learned to wing it. That's how I got through most of my life.
"Yes I have." I confirmed. "Howard couldn't pass up the opportunity to work with me, especially when he found out I am a woman."
Daniel snorted, but nodded. "That is definitely Stark. What do you specialize in exactly, Miss Reyes?"
"Chemical and bioengineering, biochemistry, and engineering, I have Ph.Ds in all theses areas though it's nothing really." I replied with a shrug.
"Now I'm starting to see the similarity between you and Stark." Daniel mentioned, letting out a huff.
What? Me and Stark? Similar? As if! Coulson then intervened upon seeing the look on my face. "Big thinkers can come off that way. Makes for a divide between those in the lab and those in the field."
"Yeah, I'm feeling it now." Daniel replied as he grabbed his cane before climbing out of his seat and into the aisle. "Think I will get that drink. Want something?"
"I'm good, thanks." I said.
"Never touch the stuff." Coulson added.
"Doesn't surprise me." Daniel retorted.
