🦋Chapter 11: The Surprise At Afterlife🦋
When we returned to the control room, Roxy and Olga were having a drink, while Tommy and Ronnie had returned, who apparently had run off while the team retreated.
"Why the long faces?" Deke asked as he approached them.
"We're...We're not worthy of your team." Tommy confessed.
"Or your band." Ronnie added.
"Come on, Ronnie. I...I knew all about your fear of lasers. And, Tommy, just 'cause you're a bit of a coward doesn't mean I don't love you. Of course I want you guys on the team. Come here." Deke advised, extending his arms out.
I then watched as he hugged the twin brothers. I cracked a smile. Deke's a good man with a big heart. But my mind quickly wandered elsewhere. I couldn't stop thinking about Sibyl though. I couldn't find her anywhere. She used that distraction of robots to slip away. She could be long gone by now. Mack approached the television with Coulson inside and I quickly joined in.
"I've been over every square inch. Sibyl's nowhere to be found." Mack commented.
"Sibyl must have gotten them out somehow." Coulson pointed out.
"Which means she's still alive." I stated.
Coulson, Mack, and exchanged grim looks. This was good at all. At that moment, Deke approached us, letting out a sigh. "Okay. So, what happens next? Kick back, relax, and wait for the Zephyr?"
"There's something you and I need to take care of." Mack informed us. "I know what you two have done in the past several months, including taking care of Ruben and me. Thank you for that."
My smile widened. "Of course. What are friends for."
"What is family for." Mack corrected, returning to my smile.
My heart warmed at his words, making me smile even more. He's right. We're family. With that, we made our way to the house that belonged to Mack's uncle where his ten year old self was along with his brother. Mack had heard of what we had done to his ten year old self and with his brother, which he greatly appreciated.
"Last semester, you got straight A's." I mentioned. "And you racked up the high score on Ms. Pac-Man..."
Mack cracked a smile upon hearing my words. Deke then added on. "And you cried buckets when you read Where the Red Fern Grows."
I let out chuckle. "Oh yeah, I remember that."
Mack furrowed his brows before turning to face us. "Wh...That says between us."
"Not making any promises." Deke retorted.
"We promise." I said, speaking on behalf of Deke.
Deke gave me a baffled look. I raised an eyebrow, crossing my arms. Deke let out a sigh, caving in. "Fine...I promise."
Mack gave me a grateful smile before turning back to look at the house.
"Uncle Marcus's car looks nicer than I remember." Mack commented.
"You don't say." Deke replied with a smile.
Mack returned his smile before it vanished, changing the subject. "How are Ruben and I...doing with, uh...You know."
"It's still hard." I replied with a grim look. "I mean this is your parents we're talking about. The pain of their loss doesn't ever go away entirely."
"Yeah, but every day's a little easier, and your Uncle Marcus has been great. I think that you and Ruben are even closer in this timeline." Deke mentioned.
