Kori stared at the chunk of bark that'd been stripped away from the tree, her vision entirely blurring over. She could barely make out the words that had been burned into the wood, but she knew what they said. It was a headstone— for their best friend.

John B and Sarah had officially been presumed dead, the storm having been four days ago. And to make matters worse, JJ and Kori were officially orphans. Well, technically half-orphans, but the point still stood. They were alone and the universe was officially out to get them.

P4L.

That's all Kori could concentrate on. Those few letters meant everything to the Pogues. The only thing that royally sucked was that Kori actually was stupidly fifteen months younger than the rest of them. That meant she had to go to school alone tomorrow; she had to do everything on her own.

"To John B." JJ voiced, lifting his flask in the air before taking a swig.

Kori finally lifted her head, glancing over at him.

"And to Sarah." Kie added.

There was a moment of silence, the realization that John B was dead finally hitting them. Ward Cameron had not only killed his father, but then framed John B for a murder he didn't commit to protect his son. All about family right?

Well, screw that.

Kori was done with all of it. Nothing truly mattered anymore. Without John B, she knew they'd fall apart. The only family she had left and she just knew things would go to shit the second school started in the twelve hours that were left of summer.

"I can drive us tomorrow." Kiara spoke again, nodding her head as she met the gazes of each of her friends. "We'll be good. Okay? All together, right?"

"You mean, most of us. Right?" Kori raised her brow.

Before anyone could say anything to try to bullshit her into feeling better, Kori turned back to the chateau. She heard JJ say something about going to check on her, but she kept walking until she reached the front porch. She took a seat on the old, wooden steps, avoiding her brother's stare.

"Hey, look," He voiced, pressing his palm into the railing. He peered down at her, only making her more apprehensive as to what he'd say. "I just—"

Good thing she didn't care to hear it though. "I don't wanna talk, J. You don't get it."

JJ let out a sigh, reluctantly sitting down next to her. "I know that. I just—I know this isn't about school. Okay, Kor?"

She glanced up, meeting his gaze with a shake of her head. "No shit it's not about school. But I don't wanna talk. I don't. What's done is done. Luke obviously doesn't give a shit, so neither do I."
