Strands of Kori's hair picked up in the wind, floating near her shoulders. It was getting colder at night, the last remnants of summer dissipating with each day that passed. Everything was falling apart. Every last shred of security she'd had in her life was gone. Slowly, ever so surely, she was losing.

Her dad— in prison.

John B— arrested for murder.

JJ— gone.

She had no idea where her brother had gone off to, much less what his crazy plan was. They'd always done everything together, which is why it made no sense as to why he'd blow her off. Being his little sister meant she always agreed with his stupid plans or backed him when no one else wanted to be on his side.

But he'd left.

Just like every last person in her life, he'd left. And maybe there was a reason for it, but it didn't mean she didn't feel shitty. Because she did. Whatever insane plan he'd concocted to save John B, she would've been a part of it. She would've done anything to make sure she saved her best friend, but JJ didn't want her help. He'd made that explicitly clear.

Still, she would've gone along with it.

Kori laid her cheek down on her knee, arms draped over her legs. They were brought into her chest, the lights from the chateau illuminating the dock where she sat. The moon shone down on the dark water, almost making it shimmer underneath the cascade of stars above her. She hadn't said a word since Sarah had gone to meet Logan, just sitting in her own comfortable silence.

She wasn't alone often, but when she was, her mind never stopped. It just kept wandering and wandering, going over everything in her life. Every memory, every interaction, it all just kept racing through her mind over and over again.

Her phone suddenly buzzed in her pocket, causing her to pull it out. She had one new message.

JAYDEN: hey, maybank. I heard about John B. Wanted to say I was sorry. if u need anything, don't hesitate to text. One less needy #, remember?

A smile somehow found its way onto Kori's face. At least one person in this world could remember she existed, even if it was Jayden.

KORI: if ur one less needy # then why are u texting me rn?

JAYDEN: and here i was trying to be nice. Last time i offer my help smh

KORI: about that...do u have the homework?

JAYDEN: maybe...

JAYDEN: i could send it to you

Kori's gaze narrowed as she waited for his response.
