Harvey hadn't spoken since he and Jim had been able to leave the crime scene. In truth, Jim didn't know how either of them had been able to think; just presuming that they had gone into a kind of automatic pilot. That they had done the job because they had had no other choice. The duo just hoping that the EMTs would also do their job. Yet now, now that they were on the way to the hospital, the reality of the situation had hit them, and hit them hard. Jim not sure what Harvey would do if the worst outcome happened.
That morning, neither man would have guessed that by the end of the day, someone they both cared about deeply, would be fighting for their lives. That one of them could lose the woman that they loved.
The day had started out like any other, Jim and Harvey meeting out the front of the precinct. Jim shaking his head as Harvey chewed on the last of his breakfast; before the two men had made their way inside, and up the stairs. The duo smiling as they saw their fellow detective already sat at her desk. A smile making its way onto her lips, as she turned to look at them. Her smile getting even broader, as Harvey had taken his hat from his head and made his way over to her. Placing a coffee in front of her, before kissing her on the cheek.
Jim had always thought that Harvey and (Y/n) were a strange paring. Harvey was older than her by a number of years; he was jaded and sat firmly in a morally grey area. The big Irishman always having said that his two favourite things were drinking and ignoring people. Whereas (Y/n), although not blind to the fact that justice in a city like Gotham was not always what you might call ethical, had yet to take that last step to being as cynical and world weary as Harvey. The female detective also much more gregarious and easier to deal with than Bullock. Yet their differences seem to make them stronger as a couple. (Y/n) able to bring out all of Harvey's better qualities when they were together.
Harvey had confessed, when he and Jim had gone for a drink together late one night, that he had no idea what (Y/n) saw in him. Bullock saying that she was beautiful and smart, too damn beautiful and smart to be stuck with him. That he knew that she could do so much better. That she should be with a man that could give her everything that she deserved; that would take her away from Gotham, from the dangerous job that they all did. Yet for some reason, she stuck with him. Jim telling him that he knew love was blind, but in (Y/n)'s case even the seeing eye dog must be blind, as it was stopping her from seeing all of Harvey's glaring faults. So, Harvey should perhaps keep his mouth shut, just in case she came to her senses. His reply just eliciting a 'gee, thanks Jimbo' from Harvey, before the pair had laughed. And all this time later, Jim just had to presume that this odd match was truly meant to be. That whatever they had together, was right, and Harvey must have a few tricks up his sleeve to make (Y/n) keep coming back for more. Yet now, now all that could be lost.
It hadn't meant to end in a shootout. The day, the job shouldn't have seen Harvey nearly getting shot; it shouldn't have seen (Y/n) taking the bullet instead as she jumped between him and the gunman. As she used her own body as a shield to save the man she loved. Jim firing off a shot of his own to take out the criminal, before he had joined Harvey who had pulled (Y/n) into his arms. The Irishman shouting for Jim to call for assistance. To call for the EMTs, before turning his attention back to the woman whose head was cradled in his lap. Doing all he could to keep pressure on the wound, as he told her not to close her eyes, as he begged her to stay with him. He and Jim only able to watch as she had been placed in the back of the ambulance by the paramedics. A blood covered Harvey shrugging off the hand that Jim had placed on his shoulder, before he turned and made his way over to the dead body that they had been called to deal with in the first place.
"Harvey..............." Jim finally said, as the hospital loomed into view.
"Why did she do it, Jim.............? She's gonna die because of me. This is all my fault. If she dies..............."
"She isn't gonna die, Harv. (Y/n) is a fighter, you should know that better than any of us. She isn't gonna just give up, that's not her style. And none of this is your fault. You weren't the bastard holding the gun. You weren't the one that pulled the trigger. And you know why she did what she did..........she did it because she loves you. That's what people do when they care about someone, they are willing to put themselves in harms way, so that others don't get hurt................"
"But if she had never met me.........if we had never got involved..........."
"Well, she did, and you did. Look, the last thing that (Y/n) will need is you feeling sorry for yourself or wanting to take all the blame for what happened. (Y/n) knew what she was doing; she made a choice. Now all you can do is be there to support her. Show her how much you love her." Jim retorted. Doing his best to sound as positive as possible about the whole thing, despite having been informed that the female detective was still in surgery. The younger man knowing that lots of things could still happen, and that if she did make it through surgery, a thorough recovery would take a lot longer.
"Now, come on. Let's go and see her." Jim added, as he pulled the car up outside the front of the hospital. Harvey unable to do anything else but nod in agreement, as he joined his partner in getting out of the vehicle.
