Why was it always the way? Harvey thought, as he made his way to the corner store on his way home. He and Jim would go out on a job....anywhere in fact, and the beautiful witness....hell, the beautiful anything, would only have eyes for Jimbo. Ok, he would admit that Jim was younger....in better shape. He dressed neatly, combed his hair; didn't look like he had just been dragged, kicking and screaming, out of bed, fully clothed. And some.....only some mind you, might say that Jim, in a certain light, was better looking than him. But, apart from all that.....what was wrong with him.....?
Alright fine, he would also admit that he could be a little gruff, cynical, sarcastic, and on many days, he was just done with all the shit; but this was Gotham, and if you came across anyone that wasn't even a little world-weary, Harvey would have to say that they were huffing something. But under the slightly crumpled exterior; under the flakes of Danish pastries and odd coffee stain, that was here and there, he was a good guy......mostly. So.....what was wrong with him.....?
"Hi Harvey........" The Irishman looking up, as he heard the cheery call, when he entered the store. A smile coming to his face, as he saw the younger woman behind the counter. The detective taking his hat from his head, as he made his way over to her.
Harvey had known (Y/n) for years. Her parents had owned the store for as long as he had lived in his apartment, before handing the running of the place over to their daughter when they had retired. The store, one of those places in the neighbourhood, people just seemed to meet, so that they could talk. And if you stopped by earlier in the day, you would find some of the older men set up outside with their tables and chairs, playing chess. The family, and (Y/n) in particular, a popular member of the community. And if you were to ask Harvey, he would say the most beautiful member of the community.
"Hi, sweetheart........"
"Looks like you've had a day. Don't tell me, those naughty criminals have been misbehaving again, haven't they......?" (Y/n) asked with a chuckle. The sound of which, suddenly seemed to instantly lighten his mood.
"You could say that......." Harvey replied, as he leant against the countertop.
"(Y/n)......"
"Yeah, Harv....."
"Can I ask you something........?"
"Well, as long as it's not the meaning of life, because I gave up trying to work that out, a long time ago....then of course you can......."
"You're a woman........"
"Well done, detective. Tell me, what finally gave me away? Here I've been, hiding it under your nose for all these years, and finally you've figured it out. Are you going to take me in....? I promise I'll come quietly........" (Y/n) laughed, offering him her wrists, to put the cuffs on.
"No, I mean....what....I...what..." Harvey babbled, completely losing his train of thought. He suddenly getting a very vivid image of (Y/n) in handcuffs...naked.....
"Sorry, Harvey. I won't tease. What was the question......?" The detective doing his best to shake the thought from his mind and get back to what he was going to ask.
"What's wrong with me.......?" (Y/n)'s brows furrowing at the question.
"As in.......?"
"As in everything......." Harvey continued. (Y/n) standing there and listening as Harvey started telling her about his partner, Jim; and how all the girls always seemed to fall for him. He never having to do anything, other than just be him. Harvey wanting to know what her thoughts were, from a female point of view.
"Well, for me, I think that these women you so concern yourself with, are crazy. I don't know Jim Gordon, but I like to think I know you well enough to say that you, Harvey Bullock, are a diamond in the rough. Ok, you are a little creased, dogeared at certain corners. And maybe you could do something about the 'I just fell out of bed two minutes before I got here' look; but other than that.....you are a good man, Harvey. You have always been kind to me, to my parents. And, I know that under that slightly shabby exterior, beats a good heart; so if people.... women, can't see that, then that's their loss. The right girl is out there; you just have to maybe open your eyes and stop concerning yourselves with all the ones that only see Jim Gordon........" (Y/n) explained, before going back to busying herself, with restocking a shelf. She doing her best to hide the blush that had come to her cheeks, knowing that she might have said too much. That in a round about way, she had said what she had wanted to tell Harvey for quite a while.
She had always had a soft spot for the detective. There was just something about him. He one of those guys that sort of screamed out that he needed a woman to look after him; and (Y/n) just happened to be one of those women that liked taking care of people. It admittedly did help that he made her laugh, and that she did think he was handsome; but she had never thought anything could of her silly infatuation. For what was she.....she was no one special. Just the woman that ran the corner store. The kind of woman that people seemed to like, but other than that......
"So......" (Y/n) taking a deep breath, as she felt Harvey come up behind her.
"If I were to.....to say, ask that right girl out, tonight. What do you think that she would say......?" He asked. (Y/n) slowly turning to look at him. She swallowing at the lump that has just formed in her throat as he smiled at her. Harvey suddenly realising how blind, how stupid he had been. Realising that Jim could have all the other girls in Gotham; because the right one for him, was standing, right there, in that little corner store.
"I would say.......I would say that she would most likely say yes......."
"Is that right.......?"
"Yes........"
"Well then....." Harvey said, as he placed his hat back on his head.
"I'll pick you up out front of the store at seven, sweetheart..." He continued, before placing a kiss to her cheek. (Y/n) just nodding, as she watched him walk out the door. It seeming obvious now to Harvey, that there was nothing wrong with him; that he had instead, just been looking in all the wrong places. And finally, he had found the right one.
