Imagine you get into a really bad accident on your drive home after working overtime one day. During your last few moments, there's too much adrenaline pumping through your system for you to register the pain your body must be experiencing, but when you look around, you know the onset of the impact was too strong and that the chances of you surviving are slim to none.

Just as quickly as your eyes droop shut for the last time with the emergency sirens ringing in the distance, you're somehow waking up in your bed completely unharmed.

"Was it all a dream?' you ask yourself in confusion, sitting up to examine where your injuries had just been a few moments ago. "It all felt too real for it to be fake, though."

At the sound of your voice, a figure next to you sits up straight, catching your attention through your peripheral vision. For some reason, you just know that the figure sitting at your desk isn't human - rather, Death himself, only a few feet away.

"Oh my stars, I really must be dreaming if I'm looking Death himself right in the eyes right now," you laugh incredulously.

"Hey, I don't like going by that name. It sounds too ominous. Plus, I took on this human form so that it'd be less overwhelming for you to take in. How'd you even recognize me that quickly, anyway?" he pouts. "Call me Riki - I like the sound of that name much better."

For a moment, you're too stunned to speak. But you decide to play along with it; it'll all be over soon anyways.

"Okay, Riki. Better?" you ask.

"Much," he smiles rather cutely.

"Mind explaining what happened and why the last thing I remember was dying in an accident?"
"Okay, hear me out," Riki begins. "I've been playing this video game for ages and I keep losing. I want to try something new today."

"You're joking, right? Are human lives just video games for you?"

"Is that the only part you got out of everything I just said?" Riki asks you with a rather unimpressed expression resting on his flawless features.

"Give me a moment okay? I just died and now Death himself is telling me my life was just another game to him."

"Right, sorry. That must be difficult to hear and understand at first," he nods slowly. "But what do you say? Do you want to help me?"

For a moment you hesitate. What does 'helping' Death entail? Are you going to be bound to him for eternity as his personal slave? Is he going to make you take the lives of everyone while he goes off on vacation? But as much as you want to decline, you're also intrigued by the idea. Plus, there's an off chance that he might send you into an eternal pit of darkness if you say otherwise.

"Sure, why not?" you shrug.
