Madam Qin would never think that after all these years, Shin-Hye would still perfectly remember the difference between them. Despite their age gap, she and her sister were highly similar, making it impossible for people to differentiate between them.
But, upon the first glance at her, Shin-Hye's remarks were clear to her ears even now:
'You still look young, Qin,'
At that time, she didn't pay much attention, thinking it was just a pleasantry from Shin-Hye. However, as time passed, Shin-Hye would refuse to use her real name and instead call her by her surname. It was indeed odd, but she didn't think too deeply about it back then.
Now, as she started to think about it, there was indeed a deeper meaning behind it. No wonder Shin-Hye never tried to get close to her again and only met occasionally. And whenever they met, Leo would be in the room next door, doing something.
It was Shin-Hye guarding herself against her, but she was the one oblivious to it. Madam Qin was truly caught off guard this time. She knew her intelligence couldn't be compared to Shin-Hye's, but she hadn't expected the difference to be this significant...
Suddenly, she laughed. "You're right... my sister, I killed her."
Jackson's face flushed with anger. He quickly stood up from his chair, staring in disbelief at Madam Qin. However, the woman seemed unfazed as she continued to laugh eerily.
"How did she manage to gain the emperor's affection so much? To the point of bearing his child. I, too, wanted to have a good life here. But when that Lan person came, I felt elated and upon learning your true identity, I threatened her."
Madam Qin had only wanted a better life by blackmailing her sister, but her sister had unexpectedly done something outrageous.
With no other choice, she had pushed the other party away, and her older sister had fallen into the pond, leading to her death.
She had tried to cover it up, but the emperor had discovered the truth rather quickly. He had threatened her and forced her to assume her sister's identity all these years. The emperor didn't want Jackson to know the truth, so he had silenced her about this incident.
If the emperor hadn't been watching her closely whenever she met Jackson, she would never have treated him so well. The emperor was truly despicable, and the person she despised even more was Jackson.
"My true birth... What do you mean?" Jackson looked at Madam Qin suspiciously. Was there something he didn't know?
"Do you truly believe you're my sister's son?" Madam Qin taunted. "You're, in fact, the illegitimate son of the emperor's sister."
The emperor had siblings, but he had eliminated them all except for one. Although it was clear he was responsible for their deaths, he had done it covertly. Through his schemes, he had orchestrated their deaths one by one, with only his beloved sister being aware of his involvement.
However, fate had its own plans. His sister had fallen ill and died, leaving him alone.
Since his sister had never married, no one had suspected that she had a son, an illegitimate one at that. The emperor had loved his sister dearly, so he had spared her son and claimed him as his own.
But, when Jackson was still young, the emperor had told him that he would never have a chance at the throne. Jackson had assumed the emperor simply disliked him, but it appeared there was a different reason.
"I'm not the emperor's son?" Jackson's mind was in turmoil. The truth weighed heavily on him.
How had he ended up being the emperor's sister's son instead of the emperor's? While he felt relieved not to have a direct connection with the emperor, something about this situation seemed off.
"How can I be sure you're not lying?"
Madam Qin chuckled. "Why don't you come to the Pan Kingdom and inquire at the Lan Family information agency? They should be able to provide you with more details."
As Madam Qin spoke, Jackson recalled someone who had visited his mother shortly before the incident. He finally understood that the leak of that information had led to his real mother's death.
Closing his eyes, Jackson felt like he was about to faint. The weight of all this information was overwhelming.
Lisa placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "She's telling the truth. I've looked into it as well. Besides, why do you think the emperor allowed you to cause chaos in the capital without severe consequences?"
Jackson calmed himself. Lisa was right. Given his reputation as a troublemaker in the capital, the emperor had surprisingly never punished him severely. Despite claiming that Jackson had no chance at the throne, the emperor had permitted him to roam freely.
If it weren't for the emperor's leniency, he wouldn't have escaped so lightly over the years. The emperor might have been furious, but he had never gone beyond grounding Jackson for extended periods and providing him with tutors to learn a few things.
"Wait, you investigated this?" Jisoo turned to Lisa, surprised by his friend's thoughtfulness. When had he become so considerate?
"Everyone who gets close to me undergoes a thorough investigation," Lisa replied calmly. This was his usual practice, though he had made an exception for this group. He wouldn't admit to taking years to find leads on Jayn's origin; that was a detail best left unknown.
Jisoo was left speechless. He had thought his friend was suddenly becoming caring, but apparently, the situation was different...
At the very least, couldn't he have lied to make me feel better?
Jackson didn't bother asking Lisa about the investigation's results. Even if he still had a father and more secrets about his birth, they were no longer significant.
Looking at Madam Qin, he felt conflicted. While it was true she had deceived him all this time, she had shown a peculiar form of 'care' even while in the cold palace. However, now that he knew she had killed his mother, there was no reason to hesitate any longer.
"Lisa, what kind of punishment do you suggest?"
Lisa raised an eyebrow. "You're leaving this decision to me?"
Jackson nodded. "You can handle it as you see fit. I won't object."
"If you say so," Lisa waved his hand.
A few soldiers appeared before them, but the three of them remained composed.
"Take her away."
"Yes."
Madam Qin's face turned pale. She was going to meet her end. The men dragged her away as she screamed and yelled loudly.
Jackson sighed. "Honestly, how did I end up being played like this...?"
"Your luck with women is terrible," Jisoo remarked, attempting to lighten the heavy atmosphere. "First time you confessed, it was to a guy posing as a girl. Every time you got close to a woman, she slapped you and left. When you tried to connect with a girl, she turned out to be Jayn's sister. And now, you've been deceived by a woman."
Jackson's expression darkened. Fortunately, Jisoo hadn't exposed all of his embarrassing experiences, especially the most cringe-worthy ones.
And as for the first incident... that had been him confessing to Jisoo when he had mistaken him for a girl. At that time, Jisoo had been disguised as a ill girl, making it impossible for Jackson to realize he was, in fact, his brother.
Lisa rolled his eyes. "I'll ask my mother to find you a suitable girl."
"No, thank you! I can find one on my own!" Jackson quickly retorted, his gaze indignant. It was as if he was asking, 'Do I really seem that bad at judging women?'
If Jisoo and Lisa knew his thoughts, they'd respond with a knowing smile and say, "Of course."
