Penelope POV
"Oh good, you're awake." A woman's voice permeated your half asleep mind.
"Mmhhmm." You grumbled.
"You missed breakfast but don't worry I can see about getting the kitchens to send something down to hold you over until lunch."
Peaking your eyes open, you watched the nurse type something onto a handheld device from the foot of your bed. When she felt you watching, she smiled up at you warmly.
"How long?" The words came out broken and you attempted to clear your throat.
"Careful, the prongs haven't fully healed yet. Wouldn't want to jostle anything and have to go back under." Placing the device on the bed at your feet, she moved to stand beside your head. Gently she reached out, tipping your chin back before probing along your neck. "Actually, this looks well healed. You should be good barring any unforeseen complications." She smiled sweetly down at you.
You returned the gesture with a scowl. "What?" Came your hoarse whisper.
"Here, see for yourself." Reaching back, she pulled a handheld mirror off the stand next to your bed and held it up to your face.
A quiet gasp left your lips at the sight of the white collar around your neck. Your fingers traced the edge of it, and something pulled inside your throat. Reaching up you ripped the mirror from her hand to watch as you lifted your chin to see beneath the white metal choker. Upon closer inspection you found the reason for the pulling was two rods coming out of the inside of the collar, piercing into your neck. The skin surrounding the area was only mildly pink and didn't hurt when you poked at it in your shock.
"What the hell is this?!" You shrieked at the woman.
Oddly, she seemed taken aback by your reaction. Like it was perfectly fucking normal to wake up looking like some kind of twisted version of Frankenstein's monster.
"Miss, please calm down."
"Calm down?! What the fuck is this? Where the hell is Bruce?" The damn doctor was going to have some major explaining to do. There was absolutely nothing your mind could conjure that would require something like this to fix.
Seriously what in the actual fuck?
Sitting up, you pushed the blanket off your legs, moving to swing them over the edge of the bed to go find Banner yourself.
Little Miss Sunshine wasn't a fan of that idea.
"Miss, you need to stay in bed. The doctors haven't-"
"Oh, shove it lady. I'm going to find him right now." You pushed her out of your way and strode to the open doorway.
What you expected to find was the hallway of the medical bay at the compound. What you didn't expect to find was a dingy, dark concrete hallway. Complete with only one light bulb hanging from the ceiling to subtly illuminate the armed guards standing by.
The guards that immediately trained their weapons on you, ready to fire. Using your shadows, you teleported their guns away from them in an instant. The two weapons clattered to the ground at your feet. They shared a look before scrambling to reach for another weapon as your shadows began to swirl around you, ready to strike again.
"Wait!" Came Goldilocks' voice carrying from back inside the room. "It's too early to test-"
Using your power, you sent one of the guards sailing back into the wall with such force that his neck broke on impact, his dead body sliding to the ground. The other guard, Keev read his name tag, pulled something from his belt. You didn't get the chance to see what it was.
