I wake up the next morning and get ready to head to the lobby at 8:30. I press the button for the elevator and stand, waiting for it to arrive. After an ungodly amount of time, I walk onto the elevator and hear running steps behind me. I turn to see Spencer jogging onto the elevator. His eyes widen with happy surprise when he sees me. He says "hi" happily until the doors fully close. Once we are in the clear, he immediately takes my head in his hands and gives me a passionate kiss. As soon as the elevator beeps, he stops and says "I knew that would probably be my only chance today to kiss you." I blush and tell him "it's definitely one hell of a way to wake me up."
The door opens up and we walk into the lobby together. Hotch eyes us walking in together. I look at him and say very quietly "we didn't sleep together last night, hold your horses." He doesn't look convinced but doesn't ask any further questions. We are still waiting for Morgan and Emily to arrive so we can go. JJ asks me "I'm going to get some coffee, want some?" I nod and tell her "I'll come with you!" I desperately need coffee and to get away from Hotch before I give away something. I didn't technically lie to him. I follow JJ over to the hotel's complimentary coffee station and begin making mine and Spencer's coffee out of habit. She eyes me and asks "is this to thank him for last night?" I stop moving and don't dare to make eye contact with her.
She clicks her tongue and says "yeah, Emily and I are in room 719. Our beds shared a wall and that wall is paper thin. I gotta say I didn't know Spencer was that good in bed." I look at her and try to hide my pleading eyes "you can't say anything, JJ, please." She smiles and shakes her head "it's fine, Hotch is on the other side of us a couple rooms down." I let out a sigh of relief and she says "I am surprised you lied to his face, though." I tell her "I didn't lie!" She cocks her head and says "it sounded like you slept together to me.." I tell her with exasperation "we did not engage in penetrative sex nor did we physically sleep together last night." JJ looks even more surprised and says "damn. I don't want to be in the room next to you guys when you do have penetrative sex." I nod smugly "yeah I know, he is that good."
I walk away with mine Spencer's and my coffees, wordlessly handing it to him. Morgan walks in the room and says "Hotch, Lila came to our room last night asking to talk to Spencer." Hotch looks livid and asks Spencer "did she talk to you?" Spencer shakes his head "I let Morgan do the talking." Hotch nods. Morgan continues "this chick is getting a little too out of control. What are we going to do the next time she shows up?" Hotch sighs and says "I don't know what we can do, Morgan. I can hold her without charges up to 48 hours in California, but then she will just harass us from within the precinct all day. We need to make sure she doesn't find out, too." We all know he means she doesn't need to find out that Spencer is married to me now.
Hotch says quietly "if she does then she really won't leave us alone." Emily comes down and says "I'm sorry I'm late, I don't have an excuse, this is just who I am as a person." Hotch is unfazed and JJ hands Emily a coffee as we all load up into different SUVs. I give Spencer a look as he's getting in one SUV and intentionally get in the other one to avoid looking suspicious. He gives me the briefest puppy eyes before acting like this is normal and getting in the SUV with Hotch and Rossi. I get in the front of the SUV that Morgan is driving and Emily and JJ file in the back. Once the doors are shut Emily says "now that we are in different company, I would like to change my excuse. I didn't get a lot of sleep last night because the neighbors next to our room had loud sex until 3 am."
JJ quietly corrects her "they didn't have sex." Emily says to her "no, you heard it, too!" JJ nods "I did and I know now that they did not actually physically have sex." Emily says "then what the fuck did they do?" Morgan looks at me briefly while watching the road, it's much busier now than it was at 1 am. He asks me "yeah, Annie, what did you do?" I sigh and look at them, they all stare back at me for an answer. I ask them "what do y'all want me to talk about it in like middle school terms?" They all reply practically in unison "yes!" I sigh and roll my eyes as I say "2nd and 3rd base. Also I thought we were all actually really quiet." Morgan chuckles "sounds about right." I tell him "we just wanted to be able to say that we didn't sleep together without lying. If any of you rat us out to Hotch I will make you regret it!" They all know I don't bluff.
I continue "it was torture having to pretend I am apathetic towards my own husband all day. Sue us for wanting to blow off some of that steam privately for an hour or two." Emily nods "well if that's going to be a nightly thing we will be investing in some ear plugs." I nod "I think that would be a good idea, especially when we solve this case." Morgan chuckles humorlessly and says "I hope when we solve this case we can celebrate in a bar and then none of us will have to hear the love birds going at it while we are all dancing and drinking." I gasp "that sounds like so much fun!" Emily goes "welp you ruined it, Morgan." JJ hits her lightly and says "that's not nice. Are you both telling me if you had the opportunity to blow off steam sexually every night on a case you wouldn't take advantage of it more often than not?" Emily and Morgan grumble in response, agreeing with JJ.
We pull into the parking lot of the precinct behind the other SUV and all file out with our work bags and into the building towards the conference room. I notice Elizabeth isn't there and ask the younger female receptionist there "hey, will Elizabeth be back tonight?" She smiles and nods "yes, she works 1pm to 1 am and I work 1 am to 1 pm. That way our shift change doesn't overlap with the men and women in uniform. My name is Trisha, is there something I can help you with?" She eyes my FBI badge as she talks, I assume she sounds much more proper than she typically would based on how stiff her body language is. I tell her "oh no I was just going to thank her again for the ride she gave me last night." Trisha smiles and gives almost a sad smile as she says "Elizabeth is such a sweet sweet soul. I hate what happened to her. Her marriage just fell apart." My eyes go wide and I say "I had no idea!" As I'm about to ask more questions, Hotch calls for me from the doorway of the conference room. I'm still not used to him calling me Winters.
I tell him "sorry, I was just trying to see if Elizabeth was here so I could thank her again for the ride last night." Hotch nods in understanding "I understand, let's get to work so we can save this victim." I nod in agreement, taking a seat as far away from Spencer as possible to prevent falling into normal affectionate habits. I don't think I could though after he got started working. He's like a well oiled machine and is accomplishing so much in a short period of time. I turn to Morgan "does he usually work this fast?" Morgan purses his lips and says "nope, I think that is all on you, Annie Banannie."
I blush and force myself to focus back on my work. I'm going through files of different clinics and areas to see if anybody stands out that has supervised or been supervised by the last victim. She went to a large program in this area so it's proving to be a long search. Spencer is still working away on the geographical profile while the rest of them use their FBI smarts to narrow things down with the behavior. Rossi sits next to Morgan after a few minutes and asks "did the kid start taking speed or something?" Morgan makes eye contact with me and says "I don't think he's taking speed, but I think he might be dabbling in ecstasy." He makes eye contact with me again and wiggles his eyebrows as I turn pink. Rossi catches up within 2 seconds and chuckles "eh we didn't expect anything less. I don't think Hotch will care as long as you don't get caught and it doesn't affect you negatively in the field. Obviously it hasn't."
I breathe out a sigh of relief and realize "maybe the SLP we are looking for affected the last victim negatively in their field. Or the other way around?" Morgan nods "like they had an affair and it caused them to neglect their duties instead of harshly doing them?" I nod "that may be why I can't find evidence of somebody being too harsh or rough with their methods. Maybe they just half assed the therapy because they were distracted and the mom knows it." Rossi nods, "that makes sense." The realizations keep rolling in as I notice "maybe it wasn't a clinical supervisor, but it was a hospital coordinator or another person higher up. We've been looking in the wrong spot this entire time!"
I look up and realize everybody is now listening to our conversation, I hope they didn't listen to the Reid on Speed bit of the conversation. Hotch nods "good work, An-Winters." He clears his throat "everybody start helping with this theory and I'll call Garcia in to see if she can find anything to line up with that." We all nod and get to work. We start looking through different files and for different bread crumbs to follow. Spencer is the reading at lighting speed and he tells us after he finally gets out of his speed bubble "I think this could be our guy." He reads out the file "Dr. Jonathon Sumner, current chief of emergency medicine, has been for 15 years, at the hospital where our last victim most recently worked. Our last victim, Olivia Moore, conducted modified barium swallows there on a PRN basis while also working at a private practice specializing in feeding therapy."
I nod, that sounds promising. The only people more insufferable than attendings would be radiologists and based on what I've heard and seen, radiologists don't have direct access to patient care for the most part. Not enough to cause a parent to be this upset with them unless the radiologist botched scans multiple times. Garcia is now on the line and is looking into our potential next victim to see if he is somebody who we need to be on the lookout for to protect. Garcia taps rapidly on her keyboard before her jaw drops open with a shaky breath "well, I think you may be right, Reid, Dr. Sumner went missing 3 days ago and has yet to be found." I ask "isn't 3 days ago when Olivia Moore was found dead?" Emily speaks up "I bet the unsub went to abduct our most recent victim and they were together and they were forced to change their plan."
Hotch nods "I think this is the right track, everybody start looking into this man's history and the geographical profile to figure out where he might have been taken and where the unsub might be keeping him hostage. Hopefully he is still alive and we can catch him." I look up at Spencer, briefly forgetting we are supposed to barely know each other, and ask him "would this be our unsub's endgame? If Dr. Sumner is the highest ranked official in this list and we have no indications of other victims, this might be the final move in their game."
Spencer nods and speaks up, repeating with more criminal eloquence to the team what my thoughts are and they all agree. He says "honestly, with the different methods, I think it's probably a woman. They were all methods of death that required little clean up and were somewhat humane in that they were quick deaths. Her most recent victim who was killed choked to death which escalates the violence a bit." Everybody murmurs in agreement and we all agree we are now looking for a woman unsub.
We continue to look with great haste for hours and come up with nothing. Dr. Sumner rarely went home, he was always at the hospital. We've been combing through the surveillance footage and have found nothing specific from the last time he was identified on camera and before. At 3 pm, we are all absolutely delirious with hunger and I have nothing speech therapisty to add in this search for our missing person. I walk over to Hotch and tell him "hey, I am not much help in this department and I can tell everybody is hungry and tired, I'm going to run pick up some food for everybody and I'll try to be back as quick as I can." Hotch nods "save the receipt and I'll be sure you get reimbursed. The keys to the SUVs are at the reception desk, you can take one."
I nod, looking to the team, all completely immersed in the case and leave the room wordlessly to not distract them from their task at hand. I walk out with my purse and head towards the reception desk to get the key and ask Elizabeth what place she recommended for fast pickup. She smiles as she sees me coming and says "hey, there! How are you doing today, Miss Winters?" I give her a half smile and tell her "well we just keep hitting roadblocks in the case every time we think we've almost figured it out. How are you doing?" She returns my sad smile and tells me "I'm doing okay and I'm sorry to hear that." I shrug, stretching my arms up to loosen up a bit, and tell her "anyway, I was going to go pick up some food for everybody, do you know of any good nearby places I can go to and get food for the team?"
She smiles and nods "yeah there's a good grab and go sandwich shop not too far from here that a lot of people in this office frequent. Tell you what, I'll get our intern from the back to come work reception for a little bit and then I'll drive you and help you out." I smile brightly and nod "yeah that would be great!" She smiles again and nods, standing to go get the intern. I look into the conference room and see them all working diligently, none of them have even noticed I left yet, besides Hotch, I don't think. Spencer is angled looking at the geographical profile and I can barely see the hickey I gave him based on how he's bent and positioned. I grimace and hope Hotch doesn't see that.
Elizabeth comes up with the intern and I walk out with her, following her to her car. I get into her car and buckle, putting my purse on the floor of the car next to my feet. She starts driving and I take in the sights of Los Angeles. I tell her "you know I've never been to Los Angeles before this trip." She gives me a brief smile and tells me "really? I was born and raised here. I don't know anything different." I nod and tell her "I'm from Tennessee but had to get out so I moved to DC because it was the best job offer I got in all the different big eastern seaboard cities I applied to while I was finishing up graduate school." She nods "well, I could tell by your accent and your kindness that you were from the south." I laugh and tell her "yeah, it's not subtle at all."
She says to me through an awkward laugh "so I couldn't help but notice the bruises on your stomach when you stretched earlier. Is everything okay?" I realize what she's talking about and tell her "oh, yes, everything's fine. It was, um, consensual." She nods and says "well, when I got to the precinct, I saw you all working so diligently and noticed that Dr. Reid had a similar marking on his neck. That have anything to do with it?" I remember what Hotch said about nobody needing to know our history so that they can use it against us. I try to be nonchalant and tell her "um, well, we were just blowing off steam last night on the case. I just met him a few days ago, it's just a fling."
She tells me "you do know he's a married man, right?" My eyes go wide and I try to pass it off as shock that I didn't know that I was fooling around with a married man instead of being shocked that she found out he's married. I clear my throat and tell her "I absolutely did not know that." She nods "I looked into it on records and stuff. They have all of the spouses and kids on the FBI files encrypted, but it lists him as married. I just thought you should know in case my hypothesis was right." I gulp and nod "well, I will definitely be ending that as soon as I can. I'll just keep my distance until the case is over and then end it officially after we've solved it so I know I won't distract from the case." She nods "that sounds like a good plan."
She continues shortly after a beat of silence "but, I couldn't help but notice how you look at each other." I chuckle nervously and ask her "what do you mean?" She shrugs and says "the longing stares and the clear avoidance of each other in the office. It looks like you're having an affair and you're trying to hide it." I tell her "I didn't know he was married. I will put an end to it." She tells me "you didn't meet him for this case. He's the reason you got called in to help with this case." I ask her "how did you know that?" Her eyes flash at me with anger just briefly and she says "I can just tell. He's obsessed with you. He should be obsessed with his wife, but you're ruining that." I tell her "he's not obsessed with me, he's just a man who will do anything for sex and attention." She asks me "so it doesn't mean anything?" I gulp as I tell her as nonchalantly as I can "no, it's just about the sex and nothing more."
She nods and says "that's what I thought." I'm starting to get freaked out by this conversation, I have no idea where we are and I realize we've been driving for longer than just a few minutes. I ask her "so are we close to the sandwich shop?" She nods "oh yeah, we are almost there." I tell her "okay, well I'm just going to call agent Hotchner and see if there are any updates on the case." I'm looking through my purse for my phone as we stop at a red light and I feel a prick in my neck as I'm doing it. I see the syringe as she pulls it out of my neck. She tells me "no you're not, home wrecker." I struggle to keep my eyes open and try to ask her what is going on before I lose the battle and close my eyes. The last thing I can remember is thinking to myself not this shit again.
