(Y/n)'s POV

I was mad at him, but working without him felt...odd. Like it felt lonely and wrong on so many levels. We haven't spoken to each other since that night.

'(Y/n)...we need to talk.' Heizou said

I looked at him, a bit annoyed, but part of me was relieved.

'I know you're still mad at me, and I thought that...you should work with a partner you trust instead of a partner you don't.'

'Wait, what do you mean?' I said, feeling uneasy

'I talked to Captain Kamisato and...I-I don't deserve to be your partner. So... it's for the best that you get a better partner instead of me. We aren't partners anymore (Y/n)...I-I'm sorry.'

'Heizou-' I began, but he turned and left.

'Good luck with the new partner.' he responded with a pained smile.

I don't even know what to feel anymore. Ok (Y/n), try and look on the bright side. Things can't get worse, right? How wrong I was. Work felt like hell. It was lonely and boring at work. I was miserable, to say the least. Everything about this case was already depressing enough, and Heizou wasn't here to try and lighten things. I sighed as I left work. I didn't want to go home, so I went to an old haunt of mine. A small playground near where I used to live. I sighed softly to myself. Then my brooding session was interrupted by Kazuha.

'(N/n)! I thought I'd find you here!' he said excitedly

Shit, shit, shit! No...No, this can't be happening. Not now, please...

'K-Kazu.' I said in surprise, getting up from the swing

'(N/n)! You'll never guess what I found out! He's alive! (Y/n) TOMO'S ALIVE!' he said happily, taking my hands

My eyes widened as my hands shook. His face was so bright and happy it made my heart hurt. This is bad...this can't be happening. How did he find out? Who told him? Heizou couldn't possibly have told him. They barely ever spoke. Kazuha looked at me in confusion as I took my hands away from him.

'H-How did you...' I choked out

His face immediately darkened. His smile disappeared with his eyes wide. His eyes soon enough

'You...knew.' he said softly. 'You already knew he was alive, didn't you.'

'Kazu, let me explain.'

'You knew.' he said, his voice shaking. 'Is this why you've been avoiding me?'

'N-No wait-'

'H-How long have you known?'

'Kazu I-'

'How long...' he asked with his voice more stern

'F-four weeks...'

'F-Four! Y-You didn't even tell me! WHY!?'

'Kazu, I wasn't sure it was him.'

'That bull shit. (Y/n) you grew up with him. If anyone could recognize him...it's you.'

He was right. I did recognize him. I recognized him the moment I saw him in the picture.

'Kazu, let me explain.' I said, trying to be calm

'Explain what?! That you lied to me. That you kept secrets from me.'

'Kazu, I didn't mean for you to find out this way!' I urged

He didn't look at me at first, but then he did. His red eyes were dull and teary.

'Then when were you planning to tell me?' he asked, his voice low and pained.

'Kazu, please just hear me out. I was-'

He gritted his teeth in anger. I could tell he didn't want to yell. He always tried not to yell at me. His hands balled into fists.

'Why didn't you tell me.' he asked again

'T-the case i-it was complicated a-and I-'

'The case? YOU LIED TO ME B-BECAUSE OF A CASE!?' he yelled

My eyes widened. This was the first time Kazuha had ever yelled at me. No matter how much I'd piss him off, he'd never yell. This felt scary. It started to rain. It was like nature could feel the pain we were going through.

'I didn't mean to. I-It was classified...and I-' I choked out with my voice trembling and softening.

'(Y/n) TOMO WAS MY BROTHER! I HAD THE RIGHT TO KNOW!' he yelled, grasping at his heart.

'I-I know, but you have to trust me. I never meant to hurt you like this.'

'The damage is already done (Y/n),' he said, scoffing. 'You broke your promise.'

'P-Please just hear me out. Let me explain. Just trust me. I never meant-' I whimpered, trying to step closer to him with tears in my eyes, but he stepped back.

'You lied. You broke our pact. You were my best friend!'

'I still am! Kazu just listen-'

'My best friend promised not to hide anything from me. She promised not to keep secrets from me. You did both.' he said with his voice cracking.

'I didn't mean it.'

'D-Did I do something wrong? Did you hate me so much that you kept this from me?' he asked with tears rolling down his cheeks.

'N-No Kazu...no, I don't hate you, please j-' I said, reaching my hand for him.

'I don't trust you.' he said, shaking his head, scared and upset. 'You're not the (Y/n) I know. You're a liar. You've changed.'

Those words broke me. He hated me. He turned around and started walking away. We were both drenched by now.

'Wait! D-don't go!'

'Leave me alone.' he said harshly

My knees felt weak as I staggered after him.

'Kazu, wait!' I whimpered

'Get out of the rain soon. You'll catch a cold.' he said coldly as he walked away.

I watched as he left. I fell to my knees crying. I was shaking from the cold. He stumbled for a second, stopping in his track. He shook his head and gritted his teeth, arguing with himself.

'Go home (Y/n).' he said, 'Before you catch a cold.'

I watched as his figure slowly faded away. I started sobbing. I didn't care that I was in the rain. I didn't care that I'd catch a cold. I was alone. I was truly alone. Heizou was gone. Now best friend too? Like was just cruel at this point. The rain got harder, and I was definitely going to catch a cold. My hair and clothes clung to me as I shivered. Suddenly the droplets stopped hitting me. I looked up to see a girl. She had blue hair and blue eyes. Her eyes were full of concern. She had a bag of groceries in her hands. She was holding an umbrella above my head.

'You should get out of the rain before you catch a cold (Y/n).'

'W-who are you a-and how do you know my name?'

'I'm Yuki. I'm Kazuha's co-worker.'

My eyes widened.

'I saw what happened...I know he's hurt, but you don't deserve to be alone in the rain. He wouldn't want you to catch a cold. He's hurt, but he still cares about you.' she said with concern in her eyes.

She extended her hand with a kind smile.

'Let me drop you home.' she said smiling. 'You need to rest.'
