"Wake up, you ungrateful, bratty girl!" A screeching voice pierced my ears, dragging me out of sleep.

I woke up to the harsh sound of my mother yelling, and groggily thought, "Why does she have to scream so early in the morning?"

"Get up! You have to go to college. Today, an important guest is coming to meet us. So leave here as soon as possible and take this ugly creature with you," my mother burst into my room, her voice loud and grating.

I looked up to see her pointing at the corner of the room where my adorable puppy, Mr. Wasoolie, was curled up in a ball. "How can she call my Wasoolie an ugly creature? He is my baby," I thought, feeling a surge of protectiveness.

"Mother, please don't call him that. He hasn't done anything wrong," I said, my voice trembling with a mix of fear and frustration.

The tension in the room was palpable as my mother's face turned an even deeper shade of red with anger. Suddenly, she swung her arm and struck me hard on my left cheek. The blow was so unexpected and sharp that I stumbled back a few steps, feeling dazed. The pain radiated through my cheek, and tears welled up in my eyes. I was stunned; I couldn't believe my own mother had hit me.

"Shut up! And do as I say. I don't want you both near my house until evening. Do you understand?" she shouted, her voice dripping with anger.

I chose not to respond verbally, fearing further confrontation. Instead, I simply nodded in acknowledgment.

"Ruhanika, I urge you to use your voice. Don't do anything that will upset me. You know well the consequences of disobeying me, don't you? Please, be a good girl and listen to me. You must remain hidden from the guests today. You are extremely important to our deal, and with the presence of such wealthy guests, we cannot afford any risks. As you are now considered Thakur's property, it would be best if they do not see you. Their perception of you could put us in grave danger. So please, stay out of sight and do as I say," my mother continued, her voice a mixture of firmness and command.
