Tring... Tring... Tring...

"Hello..." I answered the call, distracted, still scanning through the last few emails of the day.

"Put your 'hello' in the trash, beta ji. Where are you?! Do you want me to get roasted alive by your mother? She's like a volcano right now, ready to erupt. I didn't give you the liberty to do what you want, now come back home right this minute or she's going to serve me raw for dinner!" Dad's frantic voice came from the other end, clearly in survival mode.

I chuckled. "Come on, Dad. Are you really scared of my beautiful mother? Tch, tch, tch... and here I thought my father was a fearless lion."

"Don't call her beautiful, you rascal!" Dad retorted, his tone still panicked. "She's beautiful only for me! And how dare you make fun of your father, huh? Don't forget, you're sitting in that fancy office chair because of me, so don't push your luck!"

"Yes, Dad. I know. I'm wrapping things up and I'll be home soon," I replied, still grinning at his dramatics.

"Soon? You better be on your way now, or your mother will turn me into kebab! And believe me, beta, I'm not as tasty as I look."

"Why are you so cute, Dad? I love you," I said with a soft laugh, glancing at the screen of my phone, which showed a picture of me and Dad from my teenage years—he'd always been my hero.

I leaned back into the car seat as my driver started the engine, and we made our way home.

The Shekhawat and Rajput families had planned a big shopping trip for our engagement, and Mom had been furious when I told her I had an important meeting today. Thankfully, Dad had managed to calm her down. But the reprieve came with strings attached—she made me promise to be home on time. And here I was, an hour late, thanks to last-minute work that needed finishing before I could take a few days off for the engagement.
