Outside Ruhanika's House

I stood at the wrought iron gate of my home, my hand lingering on the cold metal, hesitating before stepping through. As I gazed down the driveway, a trio of sleek black Range Rovers and a menacing Mustang rumbled away from my family's premises, their engines growling as they disappeared into the distance. A frown creased my brow. I knew Thakur, the man my family had chosen for me to marry, didn't drive anything like those luxurious vehicles. Maybe he had borrowed them for our final agreement, I thought, clinging to the hope that this arrangement could still somehow be made bearable.

But as the vehicles vanished from view, a sharp pang of despair pierced my heart, leaving me breathless. The weight of impending change hung heavy in the air, and the reality of what was to come settled over me like a thick fog. I was lost in contemplation, grappling with my thoughts, when a sudden, warm, wet lick on my cheek jolted me back to the present.

It was Wasoolie, my furry companion, bounding towards me with boundless energy. His joyful antics, the way he squirmed in my arms, were a balm to my troubled spirit. He tilted his head, those bright eyes filled with concern and mischief, as if to say, "Come on, cheer up!" I couldn't resist the contagious spirit of my little furball. A smile broke through my troubled thoughts, and soon we were lost in a playful dance, my laughter echoing through the yard. For a moment, I forgot the storm brewing in my heart.

Reluctantly, I set him down, and he dashed towards the house, his tail wagging furiously, leaving me momentarily alone in the tranquil yard. The sun was setting, casting a golden hue over the surroundings, but I felt only the encroaching shadows of my thoughts.

Suddenly, a voice sliced through the stillness, sharp and dripping with sarcasm. "Oh, look who's finally decided to grace us with her presence." It was Kavita, my sister-in-law, standing at the threshold with a disdainful smirk that only fueled my unease. I took a deep breath and walked toward the house, every step heavier than the last as I sensed an underlying tension.
