Darkness falls over the small gloomy town. Rain clouds form across the gray skies. Rudy Sinclair sits on the porch, her mind fogging with terror. Her body rocks back and forth from the cold, doing anything to trap heat within her.Sobs echo from her chest like battering rams. Snot trails down her lips and chin. Her throat is sore and itchy from her screams. Rudy still fails to wrap her mind around finding Aunt Jane's mangled body.
There was just so much damn blood. Red coated the green grass like a blanket. It made her so sick that she puked right on the dead woman. And the sight of that only fueled her pain.
It also contaminated the evidence.
Tears blurred her vision as someone came up behind her to gently pull her away. Their grip on her arms was oddly soothing.
"No! Aunt Jane!" She remembers pleading with the person to let her go. It was Charlie Swan judging by the earthy scent and waft of beer on his breath. That realization only made her chest clench worse.
But she is only a girl who has the power to do absolutely nothing. So, she continues to sit against the wood porch post and fiddles with her fingers.
Rudy stares intently at the crusted dark blood on her hands. The very blood that once flowed through her aunt's now-dead person. The thought encourages her to want to puke again.
Charlie won't allow her to sit with Aunt Jane like that. Said it is too much for her to see. He won't even let Bella near Rudy. He forced a deputy to escort the girl home.
She tries to tell Rudy that everything is going to be alright. The girl doesn't let herself hear a word. It's like she is completely numb. She is carefully wiping her blood hands onto her yellow rain jacket. Staining the bright sleeves.
Soon the chief comes walking back with a phone in his hand. Looking very worried.
"Is there anyone you can call?" He crouches on his knees. Those dark chocolate eyes that he shares with his daughter are filled with sorrow. Rudy wants to ignore everyone in the world so she can disappear. Her heart was shattered into a million pieces. What more can be done?
"It hurt when my parents left me in Texas to go gamblin'," Rudy speaks and glances over Charlie's shoulder. Directly into the forest, those eyes from earlier are no longer watching her. The vampire must be satisfied enough not to linger around anymore.
Flashing blue and red lights illuminate the trees. Radio talks echoing into her ears. It is all surprisingly calming. And yet her screams still ring inside of her.
The much older man peers down at the muddy dirt with a heavy sigh. This bloody scene takes a toll on him too.
"I didn't think Aunt Jane would mean so much to me after all this time. I didn't get to say I loved her. You knew her too. What am I supposed to do now?" Her voice cracks at the end.
