"Uh, Lexi? Are you alright?" Felix asked me with a look of concern. He left me for three hours and I went from sad, moping Lexi to happy, smiling Lexi.
"Just peachy, brother dearest!" I chirped. Felix raised his eyebrows and grabbed me by the shoulders.
"Who are you and what have you done with my sister?"
I simply shrugged, shooting him a devious, yet knowing smile. Skipping around my room, I continued to pack clothes into a trunk at the base of my bed. Felix peered over my shoulder and into the box.
"Hey! Are those all my books?!" Felix exclaimed and pointed to the neat stack of books from his first year in the corner of my trunk. His hands pushed aside some of my shirts and he picked up The Standard Book of Spells and A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration. A look of realization began to dawn across my brother's face and a wide grin broke out on my face as he put the pieces together.
"Oh yeah! That reminds me! Mum!" I called. My mother was in my room in seconds, bags from Diagon Alley still clutched in her hands. Felix continued to stare at me like I was crazy, but there was happiness beneath the shock. "We're going to need to buy a new copy of Hogwarts: A History."
"What?" Mum asked. Her eyebrows knit together, and she looked from me to Felix for an answer. She was just as surprised as Felix by my change of mood.
"And a cauldron."
"Huh?!"
"I suppose I'll be needing a wand..."
"Wait, what?! Lexi...? Does this mean...?" Mum held her breath and looked at me for an answer.
Unable to hold it in anymore, I whipped my acceptance letter out from behind my back and showed it to them. Before I knew what was happening, mum and Felix pulled me into a bone crushing hug. Both Felix and my mother were grinning like madmen and saying a million things at once.
"Guys! You're crushing me!" I squeaked. At once, they dropped me onto the ground, so I could breathe again. "Now what were you saying? I couldn't hear you."
"I just can't believe this! My little girl, officially a witch! Did you do magic? Oh, how I wish I could've been here for it!" Mum exclaimed. It took about five interruptions for me to finally get her to stop rambling off praise, so I could explain. Felix and mum listened intently as I told the story of the book and the dove, soaking in each detail.
"You're lucky you didn't break that mirror missy!" Mum said sternly before a smile replaced her slight frown. I laughed and tilted my head onto her shoulder as she ruffled my hair. This was just her personality. She could never stay mad at us for long.
"You're finally going to get to go to Hogwarts with me!" Felix exclaimed. His hazel eyes shimmered with excitement. Finally, instead of leaving Felix at King's Cross station, I would be getting on the train with him!
"I just can't believe this is all finally happening!" I sighed and flopped back onto my bed. Mum and Felix flopped down on either side of me. We stared contently at the ceiling.
"This is all happening so fast! Tomorrow, we'll have to go back to Diagon Alley... And then in a little over a month, both of my children will be gone and off to Hogwarts!" Mum gushed and squeezed my hand. "You know what? This calls for a celebration!"
Mum emptied one of the bags from Diagon Alley onto my bed. Chocolate frogs, licorice wands, pumpkin pasties, and fizzing whizzbees rained onto the comforter in a large pile. Only on special occasions did mum let us pig out on sweets. Well, this definitely was a special occasion! With a huge smile on my face, I began to dig into the pile of confectionery.
