"As you know, many of the branches of magic are connected," Professor Donner, our new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher said. Apparently, Professor Gryff quit after he was offered a job chasing vampires in Romania (who knows). Now, we had this young, blonde hair witch who looked like she would run at the sight of a spider, let alone the Dark Arts.
"Today, we are learning about Dementors and the Patronus Charm," she continued and used her wand to write the words 'Patronus' and 'Dementor' on the board.
"I've heard about Dementors!" Lily whispered excitedly. "Sev told me about them!"
"The Patronus Charm is a very complex form of magic. I don't even teach the practical portion until students are in their fourth year. Can anyone tell me what the Patronus Charm does?" Professor Donner asked, her brown eyes scanning the room. Hesitantly, Remus raised his hand. "Yes Mr. Lupin?"
"Isn't it kind of like a protection charm? That protects against Dementors and Lethifolds?" Remus guessed, but he obviously knew what he was talking about. Defense Against the Dark Arts was one of his best classes.
"Correct! Five points to Gryffindor!" Professor Donner clapped her hands together. "The Patronus Charm is very useful against the dark arts. It is advanced charm work. Does anyone know how the Patronus Charm relates to Transfiguration?"
Nobody spoke in the class and we all just exchanged glances. Sighing, Professor Bonner continued her lesson by writing 'Animagus' on the board.
"Does anyone know what an Animagus is?"
Immediately, my hand shot into the air. Last year in transfiguration, Professor McGonagall briefly told us about Animagi before turning into a cat before our eyes.
"Miss Stryker?"
"An Animagus is a witch or wizard who can turn into an animal at will," I recited, remembering the small bit of information Professor McGonagall gave us.
"Yes! Another five points to Gryffindor!" Professor Donner declared. "I'm sure your transfiguration teacher only told you a little bit about Animagi. Did you know the Patronus Charm is related to which animal an Animagus turns into? For example, Professor McGonagall's Patronus is a cat, which is also her Animagus form."
"Each of you has a different Patronus." She continued. "They are unique to each witch or wizard. They say something about your personality and can connect to another witch or wizard's Patronus, for example, if the two are soul mates. However, a Patronus can change..."
Intrigued, I began to daydream about what my Patronus could be... Wouldn't it be cool just to find out? Wouldn't it be even cooler to become an Animagus?!
"The Patronus Charm is very complex for second year students to conjure," Professor Donner drawled. "Therefore, you will attempt to conjure it around your fourth year, considering I will still be teaching. Today, we will simply be reading about Dementors..."
And that was my cue to space out again. I'd already read the whole Defense Against the Dark Arts book, it was such an interesting subject to me. I could practically recite word for word the description of Dementors... Tall, slim, black hooded figures... Feeling like you'll never be happy again... Azkaban... Something about a kiss...
Bored, I glanced around the room at the rest of the Gryffindors, most of them engrossed in reading the book. Only four boys weren't paying attention at the back of the class. Whispering excitedly, James, Sirius, and Peter huddled around Remus while he shook his head.
Curiously, I continued to watch them. Sirius waved his hands animatedly and James seemed to agree with him about something... Remus was still shaking his head and met my gaze. Even from far away, I could see Remus roll his eyes.
