My mother was pretty upset when I told her I wanted to stay at Hogwarts for the holidays. There was no way I wanted to spend my entire holidays with Felix and Brittany, who was conveniently staying for the whole two weeks. Mum even tried to bribe me with candy from Honeydukes, but I wasn't budging. I don't think she wanted to be left alone with the crazy couple. I didn't blame her.
"Send mum my love!" I said to Felix, who was arm in arm with Brittany and ready to take the Hogwarts Express to go home. "And let her know how sorry I am for not coming home..."
"Don't worry, she'll be fine, she's just upset right now," Felix consoled before giving me a quick hug. "See you in a few weeks!"
"Merry Christmas Lexi!" Brittany grinned. Much to my surprise, Brittany stepped forward and gave me a hug too.
"Merry Christmas! See you soon!" I waved as they boarded the scarlet engine. In the snow behind me, I heard crunching of footsteps and turned around to see a snow-covered Lily.
"Hey," She huffed and stopped next to me. Lily was going home for the holidays too, leaving me as the only Gryffindor second year staying in the girls' dormitories. At least James, Remus, Sirius, and Peter were staying at Hogwarts too, so I wasn't completely alone.
"Lils... Why are you covered in snow?" I asked while brushing a clump of snow off her thick black coat. The skies were completely clear, a brilliant blue without a single cloud or snowflake. But Lily looked like she had just walked through a blizzard.
"Ask your friends Potter and Black," Lily hissed as she pulled her fiery hair out of its ponytail and shook it so a spray of snow flew around her. "They thought it would be funny to swing a tree branch loaded with snow at Sev and me as we walked out of the castle."
Stifling a laugh, I hugged Lily as the Hogwarts Express let out a sharp whistle, signifying it was time for her to leave.
"See you soon Lily! Merry Christmas!" I called after her and waved as she hurriedly stepped onto the train. Still waving with a few other Hogwarts students who were staying for the Holidays, we watched the scarlet engine disappear into the horizon, only a black plume of smoke visible.
Boots crunching on the packed snow, I trekked up to the castle, searching for James and Sirius as I went. The cool winter air made my breath puff out in icy clouds. It was a beautiful day, perfect for a snowball-
Smack!
A wet, cold ball of sludge hit my neck and started dripping down my back, making me squeal. Laughter coming from nobody erupted a few feet to my left. Quickly, I picked up a handful of snow and chucked it in the direction of the laughter. Just as I expected, the spray of snow hit something before sliding to the ground, like hitting a window in the middle of its path.
"James! Sirius! I know it's you!" I shrieked as another wet snowball hit me, this time in the face. Spitting out the wet snow, I ducked under another ambush. "Get out from under the cloak! That's no fair!"
"I think we could still beat you like this!" James laughed after pulling the cloak off and folding it under his robes. As if to prove his point, Sirius hit me in the stomach with a snowball.
"Oh, it is on!" I growled and balled a chunk of snow in my fist and hurled it at James, the first of many snowballs.

Tired and soaking wet, James, Sirius, and I trudged into the common room with grins still plastered on our faces. We were still out of breath from our run in with the caretaker. As we walked into the castle, tracking snow and water into the halls, we were chased down by an angry Filch.
