Sirius was hovered over the map while Remus and Peter argued over who they should invite to our Christmas party. He would be leaving any moment to grab drinks from the Hog's Head as soon as the halls were clear. Sirius couldn't use James' cloak because James was out spying on Lily and Snape. Once I told him Lily went out for a sort of date with Snape, James was right behind her with his trusty cloak.
"Let me go with you." I mumbled in a low voice, trying to avoid Remus' suspicious stare. I'm sure the entire school already knew I kissed Sirius. Although Remus and James weren't ecstatic about it, they shrugged it off but kept a watchful eye on Sirius. But I still didn't have enough private time to talk to Sirius about it and every time I went looking for him, it was like he disappeared.
"Yeah, we haven't had time to talk in the last three days. And I think we need to." Sirius laughed, his hand grazing mine as he walked past while folding up the map, holding open the door for me. Remus shook his head at me as he saw what I was doing and I just stuck my tongue out at him.
Sirius didn't speak a word the entire time while weaving through the corridors to avoid teachers and Filch. I was just waiting for him to say something to cut the tension between us. Even when we snuck into the Hog's Head cellar and grabbed some cases of butterbeer, he stayed silent, only speaking once to tell me to watch my step on the uneven floor. Finally, after an entire trip of awkward silence, we were nearing the Gryffindor tower and I had enough of it.
"You know, I came with you so we could talk." I spat. I stopped, rooted to the spot, biting my lip nervously and wondering what he was going to say.
"I know, I just don't want to say anything stupid." Sirius sighed.
"Padfoot... The usual smooth talker... You've changed."
"Oh, you don't know how much I've changed... But you know how much is at stake here."
I glanced down at my feet. Our own friendship. Our friendship with the rest of the Marauders. My heart. All things I knew I would be risking that moment I leaned in to kiss him. Maybe I was stupid for thinking he thought about me as more than a friend for half a second.
"So you regret the kiss?" I breathed.
"Not at all." Sirius laughed. "It makes everything even more complicated... But it does clear up the bet between Avery and I, we're officially tied now."
I couldn't help but feel angry. What was I to expect? Him to just drop the bet and date me?
"I don't want to hurt you..." Sirius mumbled. "I know I want to just screw Moony and Prongs telling me to back off because it could ruin everything between us, but even more than that, I want to just kiss you every time you bite your lip or smirk- Merlin! Stop doing that Vix!"
With a weak laugh, I stopped nervously biting my lip.
"I won't let it change anything between us... It's inevitable, isn't it? That best friends start to have feelings for each other?"
"I hope you're not saying Prongs is secretly in love with me..." Sirius joked, trying to lighten the mood. "So what you're saying is... My offer for friends with benefits is still on the table?"
Very slowly, I nodded, feeling like I'd agreed to an Unbreakable Vow rather than agree to the occasional snogging with my handsome best friend.
