My bright blue eyes blinked unbelievingly back at me as I stared in the mirror. Slowly, I turned in a circle again, completely astonished at my appearance. On the wood floor, my soft paws didn't make a single sound as I paced, admiring the new fox reflection on the sleek glass.
It wasn't the fact that I finally mastered turning into an Animagus that had me so confused, it was the color of my fox. For some reason, the usual bright red fur that my Animagus had after I took the potion was gone. Instead, the fox staring back at me was completely black.
Baffled, I willed myself to become human again. Right on cue, the inky black fur receded into my pale skin, and there I was again, sitting on my floor in jeans and a red tank top. With a smile, I stared at my reflection, knowing I was the first person of the Marauders to master their Animagus form. Excitedly, I thought about writing a letter to each of my friends, bragging to them that I could finally turn into a fox while they were still half animals. But the first thing I did was reach for the ornate mirror that was sitting on my dresser.
"Sirius Black." I said to the mirror. My reflection waved away to reveal a view of Sirius' ceiling and a part of his wall, which was covered in posters of the motorcycles and models that he loved so much. Blaring rock music rang out from the mirror and I rolled my eyes.
"Padfoot! PADFOOT!" I screamed. Thankfully, Felix and mum were out for the day, so they didn't hear me screaming. Of course, Sirius couldn't hear me over his music, so I sighed and set the mirror back on my dresser.
Flopping back on my bed, I stared at the ceiling, contemplating my not so great idea. Would it be rude to show up at Sirius' house unannounced? Sirius probably wouldn't mind... But Walburga already didn't like me very much since the last time I went to her house, Sirius let slip my mother was Arlene Boot, the 'blood traitor' pureblood witch who married a muggle.
Shrugging my shoulders, I hopped off my bed and started out of my room and down the stairs. What the heck, why not pay Sirius a visit? This is important enough... Besides, he was used to seeing me about once a week throughout the summer, but I hadn't even talked to him in the two weeks since we got our Hogwarts letters- he was either busy when I tried talking to him or my mum wouldn't let me leave the house for some odd reason.
Before leaving the house, I scrawled a note and left it on the table, letting mum and Felix know I was out and would hopefully be home for dinner. As I stepped towards the fireplace to grab a handful of Floo powder, Felix's cat rushed out from under the table and hissed at me, like she knew I was breaking the rules.
"Oh hush Midnight!" I grumbled and kicked her out of the way. She hissed again before scrambling away to hide again. I started a small fire in the fireplace despite the sweltering heat and threw a handful of powder into the flames, turning them green.
"Grimmauld Place!" I shouted after stepping into the flames. The welcoming kitchen zipped away and I knew in moments I would be standing in the grimy fireplace of the Wheatsheaf, a pub near Sirius' house. Walburga never allowed me to use the fireplace in the Black household, so I had to find alternate ways to get there. Even if that did mean showing up in dirty pubs full of perverted men.
Smoke and green flames cleared from my vision, and the dark and shady establishment appeared with the gaunt old man who was always behind the bar. The Wheatsheaf's sickly and grimy owner, Mr. Wilson, looked up at me upon arrival and gave me a toothless smile.
"Ah, Miss Stryker!" Mr. Wilson's gums smacked as he spoke. "Out to see Mr. Black, I presume?"
"Yes sir..." I sighed, trying to leave the place without the usual creepy conversation. Typically, the place was full of drunks and old men who would talk to me as I passed through. But that day, the Wheatsheaf was deserted, and looked like it hadn't been full in a while, judging by the more than usual dust collecting on the tables.
