"I'm back" I called, shutting the door "And?" Alfie called back "And he went no trouble" I said, rounding the corner to him in the office "Fuck sake, what have you got that I ain't?" He asked

I shrugged Carter went to school perfectly fine with me I had no clue why he was acting up with Alfie "Maybe he's more scared of me than you" I teased He looked up at me, and I almost immediately took my words back.
If we were... together, I would have been nervous he would do something to playfully reprimand me And yet... now I was just nervous But I found myself wanting our playful interactions I wanted teasing And I wanted to smile with him.
But we weren't a couple any more I had no idea what we were All I knew was I didn't want him to leave, and since I got back two days ago, he hadn't left.
He hasn't left the house He hasn't left our- my bed.

"He probably is" he shrugged "Why?" I asked "Boys here think I've gone soft" he said "Suppose I have a bit" he said
"You haven't gone soft" I chuckled, rounding the desk as I pulled my coat on "You've just got more sympathetic with age" I smiled, leaning down to take his keys
"You calling me old?" He asked, grabbing my wrist as I tried to leave "No. But if I was..." I drawled out, sitting on the edge of the desk "I would say you've aged like fine wine" I teased
"Fine eh? I'll take that" he said, looking me up and down How can one pair of eyes make me so nervous?
"Where are you going today?" He asked I shrugged "Here and there. At a bit of a loose end" I said "Why don't you stay here then? Let me look at you while I work?" He mused "Because there's more important things to do Alfie" I chuckled, standing up
