Mariana's POV

"Poolside..." Irene chuckled, slowly seating herself
"I die poolside. That is something I never would have bet on" she said, placing her handbag on the table and reaching in
I raised my arm
"Just a cigarette" she said, holding her hands up.

"Did you bet that it would be me?" I asked curiously, lowering my arm to rest back on the table
She cocked her head
"No" she said, silence following

"Just do it already. You're wasting both of our mornings" she said simply
"You'd so readily die? You only just lit your cigarette" I asked, chuckling
"You clearly have things to say. But yes. This is a simple game Mariana. You or me, and I'm not the one holding a gun to the other" she answered

"I never wanted it to come to this. I thought we could have gone our separate ways in a somewhat amicable agreement" I said honestly
"No. No not after you left me to hang. Taking away your business. You knew it would hurt mine" she said

"I had to stick by my family" I said
"Some would argue we are family" she said
"No. We are business. You and me, we don't share blood. We share a man that we both know deserved his death. You could have found other resources, other allies, you already have plenty... had plenty" I said

"Yes, the Fords, another thing you took away from me" she said calmly
"No. I didn't ask them to abandon you" I said
"No, but after everything, like I said. Me or you" she shrugged

"And like I said. It didn't have to be. You could have walked away too" I said
"But" she said simply

"But you killed Aila Solomons. A very stupid move" I said, matching her calmness
She seemed content with her fate
She knew she was dying
So why not be honest?

"You killed an innocent Solomons, though there aren't many. And then you came for my children" I said
"You made it personal" I said simply
"No, it has always been personal between us" she said

"Since that bullet hit my son. Since that bullet hit my last son. Since you killed my husband. Since I killed your sister in law. Since my daughter abandoned me, since my grandchild will never know me. It has been personal since my husband ran off and fucked your whore mother" she said

"My mother isn't a whore" I said
She scoffed
"She isn't. My mother liked Ray. For some fucking reason. She liked him and she gave him a chance. One that left her alone, with two kids to raise... but she did. She raised us. She loved us. And I had a better life than I ever would have under his influence" I said

"Ray was a good man deep down" she argued
"Hm. A good man with five children. Three of which are dead. All his sons. No name to be carried on, I wonder if that is significant" I thought aloud
