He opened the door to see her standing there with tears streaming down her face with a few pages of what looked like an internet article in her hand. "How could he say this about me?" He was confused, he didn't know what she was speaking of at all. He pulled her into his apartment and closed the door behind her. He eased the papers from her fingers and looked at the headline.
He let out a annoyed sigh as he walked her over to his couch and set her down. He skimmed over the paragraphs, growing more and more upset and angry as he read on. Once he finished he ripped the pages of the article and threw them onto the floor. He turned to face her, "Hey," he whispered causing her to look up at him. He wiped the tears that were continuously streaming from her eyes. He hated to see her cry. She was too wonderful of a person to have to deal with all the bullshit. "None of that shit he said was true." he tried to convince her. "He's just trying to find a way to bring you down, but you can't let him see you falling. It will hurt him more to see you taking this like a grain of salt than to make a big deal about it. Kill him with your success." He pushed a piece of her hair from her face an wiped a few more tears from her face. He had stopped the tears with his words and for that he was grateful.
She sniffed and wiped her eyes. "This is why you're my best friend," she said before pausing for a second. "I wish I could find a guy like you."
"Because dating me would just be too easy," he mumbled more to himself.
"What?" she questioned, not catching everything he said.
"Nothing Tay," he whispered as he got up from the couch and started toward the kitchen. "You want something?"
"I want to know what you just said," she replied as she got up and followed him into the kitchen.
"Don't worry about it." he opened up a cabinet and pulled out a bag of chips.
"You're being stupid." she said with a laugh as she looked at him. "Just tell me. You always listen to my problems. Why can't you tell me yours?"
"That's just the thing Tay, you trust me with all your secrets, but you can't trust me with you heart." Taylor stood silent and looked at him a bit dumbfounded. "You and write all these songs about how these so called men break your hearts and how they ignore you and I just walk behind you and sweep up the pieces whenever shit goes wrong for you. But you don't see that all the while you're breaking my heart."
"I..." She stumbled over her words, not knowing what to really tell him. "I didn't know."
"Of course you knew," he spat. "You make your hints about there never being an us because you're scared it will ruin our friendship." He remembered a few things she had said in the past and reminded her. He hated that about her, how she thought her hints and messages were subtitle when they beamed what she really meant. "All I want to know is why the fuck you think I would hurt you when I hate to see you cry? When I hate to see you hurting. I would never in my life be able to live with the fact that I hurt you in any way, shape, or form. Why can't you just see that I'm in love with you, and you're just keeping me in a little safe place, so you can continue to play me like a puppet? "
"For someone that never wants to see me cry you sure have a shitty way of showing that."
Travis let out a chuckle and shook his head. "That's all you got out of that?" He licked his lips out of frustration. "That's really cold, Tay."
"Shut up," she told him with an eye roll.
"Get out, Taylor" He rubbed his temples as he spoke, and took a seat in one of the kitchen chairs. He was starting to get a headache even thinking about it.
"Why are you putting me out?" Her face was shocked, her brow furrowed. She sat down in a chair across from him and looked directly at him.
"Because everything I just told you went in one ear and out the other."
"What do you want me to do?!" She didn't appreciate the way he was speaking to her. In all of their years of friendship, he had never made her out to be an idiot the way he was today. She was frustrated with him for the first time in their entire friendship.
"I honestly want you to leave." She got up from her seat and started walking over to his front door. Her hand rested on the doorknob before she spun around and looked at him.
"Don't you see I'm terrified?! I love you. I can't even deny that I do, and I want to be with you, but what if everything goes wrong? What if you break my heart?!" She was beginning to get choked up. Her words were getting caught in her throat., coming out a bit squeaky.
He looked over at her, seeing she was upset. That was one of the only reasons her voice went high pitched and squeaky. He let out a sigh as he got up and walked over to her. "Why would I break your heart? I've watched you go from guy to guy and be lied to and cheated on. Why would I want to put you through that." His hands went to her hair. He rested his forehead against hers as tears began falling from her eyes for the second time since she had gotten to his place. He wiped a few of her tears away with his thumbs but more fell. "I hate seeing you cry. I want to keep you from going through this type of bullshit ever again. I care about you as more than just a friend, Taylor. I've been trying to make you see that for years now, but you just don't want to see what we could have."
"How do you know that you won't hurt me? I don't want to lose my best friend, I don't know what I would do without you," she stuttered over her words as the tears continued to fall.
"Do you trust me?" She replied to him with a nod. "Then you have to trust me when I say that I love you more than anything in this world, and I will never hurt you." She nodded once again and sniffled. Before he could think twice his lips had met hers. Her arms, which were folded across her chest, dropped to her sides. He pulled away and looked in her eyes that were filled with a certain fire. "I've been wanting to do that for so long now."
"Um..." She stammered, biting down on her lip. "So, what does this mean?" He simply pulled her in closer to him and kissed her again. She wrapped her arms around his neck, happy that they finally had gotten what their hearts had wanted.
