I flew close to the surface of the lake, trailing my fingers in the icy water. I felt like I was being ridiculous, but the yule ball felt important. I flew up to the Astronomy tower, landing by the largest telescope.
I sat, dangling my legs over the side of the tower. This year was turning out to be just as strange as the last. As the sun began to set, I looked down and saw the other students trailing back toward the castle in groups of 3 or even 5.
It must be so nice to not have to worry about the tournament. As the sky was painted indigo and stars began to glow, the air chilled to a smoke-blowing temperature. I exhaled, watching the puff of smoke disappear into the sky.
Torches were supposed to light the tower in the dark, weren't they? I glanced behind me, the tower remaining pitch black. "Lumos." I cast, a small ball of light illuminating the tip of my wand. My heart leapt in my chest. I heard what sounded like scratching, but couldn't identify the source. I flicked my wand around rapidly, but no one appeared. Then what was...? Unless...
I lifted the locket from around my neck, putting it on the wooden floor. "Lumos" I cast again, watching as the intricate ivy patterns on the locket began to move away from the edges of the locket the closer my light came. Light! Directed light! That was the key!
I held my wand in my teeth, lifting the locket in my hands to try and open it again. Little by little, the locket opened. "Hidden from the sun, careful you must run. Minutes ticking quick, the correct choice you must pick. Make use of your power, sure to last the hour. Together or alone, the answer will be known. Save your loved one fast, you're lost if you're last."
The words came out in a whisper, as though the audio equivalent to the ivy design on the front. I exhaled, unsure what to make of the riddle. This was the next task? Given that light was used to open the locket, it seemed that whatever we were doing next needed light.
Together or alone? Could we work together? The last line stuck with me, repeating over and over in my mind. Save your loved one fast...you're lost if you're last? What did it mean? Was something going to happen? We had to pick something to save our loved one...and we had to make the right choice. What did it mean?
I scratched my head, groaning. I had gotten one step closer but achieved nothing. As I sat thinking, the torches in the tower finally lit themselves, however they brought no comfort to me. I lay back, looking up to the roof. It was alright, I had time to figure this out.
I wondered if I should tell the other champions? Or at least give them a clue on how to open the locket? "There you are! I've been looking for you everywhere." Sebastian greeted, sitting beside me. My hurt feelings from earlier came rushing back, as I gave him a halfhearted smile.
Perhaps my expectations were too high... I sat up, holding out the locket. "You opened it??" Seb asked, grinning. I nodded quietly, once again casting Lumos and opening the locket, the riddle repeating. Seb listened, confusion painting his features. " I wonder what it means..."
He held onto the locket for a moment, before returning it to me. "I had thought we were going to surprise you in Hogsmeade, but you ran off before we got the chance. What's the matter?" he asked. I sighed, crossing my arms. "If you don't know then don't worry about it."
My sour tone seemed to surprise him, but he snaked an arm around me anyway. "Come on darling, please?" "No..." I trailed off. He then decided to poke my sides, earning a laugh from me. "No! Leave me be!" I giggled, pushing his hand away. Sebastian however, seemed relentless, following me even when I scurried to get up and run.
He gave chase, laughing until he finally pinned me against the wall, lifting my arms above my head and keeping hold of them with one hand, the other attacking my sides. "Tell me!" he laughed, holding me tighter as I tried to wriggle free. "It's silly!" I gasped, thankful that he had stopped for a moment.
"Not to me..." he answered seriously, his tone shifting causing my face to heat. I became very aware of the position we were in, my wand in my pocket and my arms restrained. I was at his mercy. "S-Sebastian..." I trailed off, turning my face away in embarrassment.
We'd done things like this when we first started dating, but never since. Sebastian lifted my chin with his finger, looking into my eyes as though he were searching for something. "Tell me." He whispered, his voice husky as he leaned closer. "I-It's..."
"If you tell me it's silly one more time, I'm going to bite you." His hand had moved to the side of my neck, his lips a breath away from mine, his thumb trailing over my jawline. "Tell me." he said again, this time sounding like an order rather than a request.
I was trapped, but something in me enjoyed this game we were playing. I wondered how far Sebastian would go to get information out of me, or to reward me if I told him what he wanted? "It's stupid..." I trailed off again, challenging him. "Wrong answer."
He tilted my head to the side, his lips finding the tender skin of my neck to kiss it, biting down hard. I let out a quiet yelp, and squirmed as he sucked on my skin. "S-Sebastian!" I exclaimed, my breath hitching in my throat as sparks traveled throughout my body.
He pulled back, licking his lips as he looked me in the eyes again, his expression had now been replaced with something I hadn't ever seen on him before...longing and lust. It felt as though he was a predator, and I had become his prey.
"Try again darling..." "But.." I hesitated, unsure how to even answer. "Darling, I am not afraid to leave as many hickeys as it takes, so you may as well tell me." I tried to break free of his hold again, causing him to laugh darkly. "You're not getting away, so tell me." I sighed in defeat.
"It's about the yule ball...why haven't you or Ominis asked me yet?" He finally released me, shaking his head. "We've been trying to catch you alone so we could discuss it, but somehow the girls are always around you...or we've been fending off other eyes." I looked at him surprised. "Other eyes?"
He smirked offering me a hand like a gentleman. "Come with me, Ominis and I can explain." his expression had returned to normal, leaving me sort of sad. I caught myself in embarrassment. Perhaps I was ready for more attention of THAT kind...?
