A week had passed in the blink of an eye, as time normally moved faster when busy. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I tried to steady my nerves as I made my way to the great hall, meeting up with Poppy and Sam in the hallway. As we chatted, I could feel my anxiety slipping away.
Whatever was going to happen? We could handle it. As I got settled with Sam and Poppy in the great hall, I watched with curiosity as other students filed in and took their seats. How on earth was a Goblet going to pick 4 names? It was an object, Surely it didn't just call them out?
I glanced to the other side of the room, eyeing Sebastian and Ominis. Of course, Sebastian had put his name in and was eagerly awaiting to see if he was able to take part in the tournament. Ominis however, seemed nervous, more so than usual.
I watched in confusion, trying to think of why he would look that way, but drawing a blank. Professor Black cleared his throat, drawing everyone's attention forward. "Students, I take it you are all ready for us to announce our champions?"
Everyone clapped, before falling quiet. Professor Black dimmed the flames in the lights, allowing the Goblet's blue flames to glow brighter. He put a hand to the Goblet, watching the flames before retreating a few steps. The flames changed to pink, spitting out the first bit of parchment, as it floated down into his waiting hands.
"The first champion is...Alice sprig!" The students from Beauxbatons erupted in applause, a tall girl with long flowing black hair stood and walked toward Professor Black, taking the parchment from him. The room fell into anticipated silence again, the students waiting for the next name.
They didn't have to wait long before the flames turned pink and spit out the next bit of parchment. "The second champion is...Jason Petrov!" Like before, the students from Durmstrang clapped loudly, a larger muscular boy with a shaved head sauntered toward Professor Black, taking the parchment.
I noticed that both students to be picked so far looked like 7th years, perhaps they had been picked because they had more experience. Uagadou was next, a girl called Zuri Okeke was called. I watched as Natty waved to her happily, before sitting back down.
"She was one of my friends back when I was in Uagadou! I was younger, so she helped me to study and perfect my wandless magic!" She whispered to me excitedly. I swallowed, knowing the name for Hogwarts must be next.
I felt unease creeping into my stomach, something telling me that this wasn't going to end well. I silently prayed that Sebastian wouldn't get picked, that it could be any other volunteer. I knew he wanted to, but I didn't want Sebastian in any sort of danger...
"Ominis Gaunt!" My blood ran cold, a hush falling over the room as everyone turned to stare at Ominis. Without even thinking, I leapt to my feet. "No!" I cried, before covering my mouth, tears in my eyes as I felt my stomach sink. It couldn't be Ominis! I felt my hands shaking with anxiety, not for myself, but for Ominis.
He hadn't even volunteered his name! How was this possible? I looked to Ominis, whose fear was subtle but obvious to me. He sat frozen, seemingly unable to move a muscle. At that moment, I let out a silent prayer that the headmaster had simply read the parchment wrong, pleading with whatever god existed that Ominis be spared from competing.
"Sir! That cannot be! Ominis didn't even enter his name into the Goblet!" Sebastian called urgently, desperately trying to stop Ominis from being called up. Professor Black's face went red. "Are you implying that I cannot read a simple piece of parchment Sallow?!" He roared, causing Sebastian to sink back down into his seat.
"It does seem unlikely he-" Professor Weasley started, but was cut off. "I can assure you Professor Weasley I still have good eyesight! I can see right here, Om-..." Professor Black trailed off, eyes widening as he looked at the parchment.
The whole room seemed to hold its breath, wondering, waiting to see if Ominis would be forced into the tournament. Waiting to see if a blind student, would be forced to enter a tournament where people could die easily. " Emily Kingston!"
The world stopped, everything falling even quieter for me as students now turned to me. I could see people applauding, but could no longer hear it as panic set in. My eyes met Sebastian's, as he too seemed to panic, even Ominis' face seemed to pale.
I felt Natty push me forward, as I walked toward Professor Black, who handed me the parchment. As I sat, I studied it. It was not even my handwriting. "Are you alright?" Zuri asked me, seeming to notice my silent panic. "I..didn't put my name in either..."
Professor Black held his arms out proudly. "There you have it! Our 4 champions have been chosen! But in the end, only one will go down in history, only one will claim ownership of this!" With a flourish of his wand, a glowing trophy appeared, the silver glistening and carved into intricate details.
Students chattered excitedly, and the other champions moved away to chat among their friends. I took a deep breath to calm myself, my stomach churning. Whether I liked it or not...I was now a competitor in the Triwizard cup.
"Are you alright dear? You haven't moved a muscle for a while now." Professor Weasly asked kindly, snapping me from my trance. I looked over to Sebastian, who was trying to get Ominis' attention. Ominis, seemed even more in shock than I was, even from where I sat I could see his pale face, his clenched and shaking hands.
I took a deep breath. "Professor...Ominis didn't put his name in that Goblet, I know he didn't. Please...someone else did, and I'm sure that's a violation of the rules." Professor Weasley eyed me carefully. "I know dear...but it wasn't his name that got called in the end, it was yours...Are you sure that you will be ok with this?"
I clenched my jaw, swallowing hard. I could see Sebastian talking to Ominis quietly, Ominis looking on the brink of tears. He knew something about this, my gut told me so. "It's better this way. I can compete in Ominis' place." I said, sounding more stern than intended.
Professor Weasley looked a bit taken aback, before patting my arm. "If you're sure dear...perhaps you should use your study quarters to prepare." she suggested quietly, turning back to the other professors. I got to my feet, practically sprinting to the room of requirement. I needed to process this properly.
