When I awoke, I was in the hospital wing covered in bandages. I felt a bit fragile, the light streaming in a little too bright for my eyes. I heard a man clear his throat, and I looked to see Professor Black sitting beside my bed. Or, the blurry shape of him.
"Professor?" My voice felt sore to use, the bruising on my throat was still swollen. Professor Black raised a hand to silence me. "My dear, I have been humbled recently. Do you know why that is?"
I shook my head. Professor Black sighed heavily. "Because, as it turns out, I am not very good at my job." I must have looked confused because he continued. "You my dear, should not have had to face the confusion and danger of being in a tournament you didn't even sign up for. And yet, you did so with grace and adaptability, to protect those you care for.
I should have known something was fishy when my-...when Mr and Mrs Gaunt asked me to change the second task. I have been made aware of the circumstances you have had to face alone this year, and as headmaster, it was my duty to protect you from those. I failed to do so."
He frowned, and I could only offer a smile. "It's ok..." I managed to get out. We sat in silence for a few moments, before he patted the foot of my bed. "Well, I suppose some context is in order. Mr and Mrs Gaunt have been charged by the authorities, and are being sent to trial as we speak.
Their son, Morfin, is to be sent to Azkaban for attempted murder, torture, and trifling with a magical artifact." I nodded slowly, processing the information I had just received. "I have also been discussing things with Professor Fig- Ah, his portrait that is, and he thinks that due to your injuries, you should get an extension on your exams."
I nodded quietly again, the professor seeming to become awkward. "Well now...I suppose that was all I wanted to say." I heard Professor Weasley clearing her voice from the foot of my bed, surprised that she was there too.
"With all due respect Professor Black, I think we both owe our young champion here an apology. She was forced to risk her life while under our care, and it is the second time she's had to do so." "Yes yes, quite right. Miss Kingston, I do apologise for our carelessness."
Professor Black stood, giving me a nod before cantering away. I sighed. Professor Weasley handed me a small bottle. "Here dear, for the pain in your throat. It should make it easier for you to talk at least." I downed the potion, I recognised the taste as a wiggenweld.
"Professor, what happened? Who won?" Professor Weasley put a hand on my arm. "Do not stress about that now dear. We will announce the winner properly at the assembly tomorrow. For now, do you think you can make it to your common room?" I paused, shaking my head.
My injuries were fine but I could barely see anything. My glasses were gone. "Well, perhaps it would make you happy to hear that two young Slytherins have been dying to see you, we just wanted to ensure that you were well-rested before they did.
They have been asking about you almost every hour." I felt my heart warm, my cheeks turning red. "Are they here?" I asked, to which Professor Weasley shook her head. "Wait here, I will send for them."
I heard Sebastian and Ominis before I saw them, the pair of running footsteps not stopping until they reached my bedside. I felt Ominis wrap me in a hug, Sebastian's arms wrapping around my shoulders as he showered my face with kisses.
"Thank Merlin you're alright!" Ominis cried, and I could feel his heart pounding. Sebastian took a deep breath, quietly looking me over. "Alright is a...generous term." He seemed to wince as I sat up more.
"I can still beat you in a duel sallow, don't you forget that." My remark caught him off guard, as he laughed heartily. "There she is." Ominis sat back, holding my face in his hands. "Darling I am eternally sorry for the things my family did to you...this is all my fault."
I hushed him, kissing his hand. "Ominis, I would do the same thing again a hundred times over if it meant keeping you safe. Your family does not represent you, my love." Ominis' eyes filled with tears, and even Sebastian seemed misty-eyed. It was finally over, we were safe.
"If you two wouldn't mind, I'd like to head back to the Ravenclaw common room? I might need a little bit of help, since I cannot see very well." Sebastian chuckled, kissing my nose. "Of course, but these might help." He slid my cracked glasses on my face, the world sharpening until I could see perfectly.
It was then I noticed how haggard and tired my boys looked, the relief on both of their faces as they saw I was still alive, still moving. I must have really scared them. I pulled them both close, kissing them both tenderly on the lips.
"I love you both so much, I would do anything to protect you. Thank you for finding my glasses, and for always doing your best to look after me." Sebastian kissed my hair, Ominis simply held me close. We stayed there for a little while, safe in each other's company, before we made our way back to our common rooms.
