"Emmy!" Sebastian and Ominis were now at my side, Zuri backing away to speak to one of her professors. Ominis put both his hands on my cheeks, his thumbs rubbing my freezing skin. "Are you alright?? Are you alright???"
He demanded from me, his tone panicked. I smiled tiredly. "I'm ok, it's ok." Ominis and Sebastian visibly relaxed, both wrapping an arm around me. "I thought for sure that blast had gotten you.." he mumbled. Even Sebastian seemed relieved.
"That was some fight! How on earth did you know to climb on its back?" I shrugged. "It's a horse, sometimes they need to be broken in when they're not used to riders. But Ominis, how did you know it was going to do that?"
"I discovered this morning that Kelpies make a hissing sound and go still right before they do that...I could hear the Hissing." I nodded, giving his arm a squeeze. "Thank you, you saved me." Sebastian and Ominis released me from their hug, Sebastian now rubbing my back to try and warm me.
I looked up to see a man and woman approaching, the man with black hair and a mustache, the woman with light blonde hair like Ominis'. These must be his parents. Both looked me over with the same cold stare that I met stubbornly.
"Do you really not know when we are around boy? Show some manners!" Ominis stiffened, before standing and bowing slightly. "Of course Father...Hello Mother." I knew Ominis could feel their condescending stares, even without being able to see them.
"Sebastian, it's good to see you again." Ominis' mother greeted, Sebastian giving her a polite, but reserved smile. I took a deep breath. "I don't think we've had the pleasure of being introduced." Ominis' father asked me, his smile polite and fake.
"Yes dear, one would think we'd know about such a powerful witch such as yourself!" Ominis' mother joined on her husband's greeting. "Of course. But you would know that I am the one who saved our school from Ranrock and Rookwood last year, even if you heard so in passing. My name is Emily Kingston."
I greeted, putting in the same amount of fake sweetness as they were. "I'm Rionach Gaunt, and this is my wife Josephina Gaunt. I see you are close with my son." From my peripheral, I could see both Sebastian and Ominis keeping very still, as though both were too nervous to even breathe.
Ominis' mother smiled widely. "The Kingstons! I don't believe I've heard of that wizarding family! You simply must introduce us." I bit back a smirk. "Oh no no, you misunderstand me. I am not from a wizarding family at all." I watched Ominis' parents stiffen, then turn to look at one another.
"Not that it matters, of course, I still dedicate myself to my studies as any other student would, and as you saw, I am quite capable! Anyway, I do believe Professor Weasley is calling us, but it was wonderful to meet you both!" I said warmly, taking Ominis' arm and beckoning for Sebastian to follow.
We made our way to the other champions, who were walking back toward the champion's tent. It was only when we were back inside did Ominis finally calm down. Sebastian laughed. "That was wonderfully handled! The looks on their faces when they found out!" Ominis cracked a smile. "It's not often I wish I could see, but I wish I could've seen them."
I sat on a bench inside the tent, letting out a long deep breath. That was the first trial done, I had done it. "Are you alright? You look pale." Zuri came to my side, the concern on her face clear. I nodded.
"I think I'm just exhausted and in a bit of pain, but I'm sure it'll go." She nodded, sitting next to me. "I noticed when you were fighting off that beast you were struggling to keep a hold of your wand. If you like, I can teach you wandless magic to help you prepare better for the next task?" I beamed at her.
"That would be wonderful Zuri! Thank you!" Jason, the competitor from Durmstrang approached us as well. "It seems like you're a fierce competitor, I have to admit I underestimated you." I gave him a weak smile, to which his cheeks coloured.
"I'm not as meek as I seem." I teased, causing Sebastian to laugh. "You? Meek? Absolutely not!" I felt Ominis give my hand a squeeze, before tugging Sebastian's arm. "We'll see you back at the castle, come meet us later ok?" I nodded, watching them leave.
Zuri smiled at me. "You three seem close." I chuckled. "Yes, we are." I fondled the locket in my hand, glancing around to notice that everyone else had one too. It seemed strange, a locket. It was larger than normal, fitting neatly into my palm.
It was golden, with intricate carvings that looked like ivy forming a loop on its surface. I tried to open it, sighing as it remained stubbornly shut. "Can anyone else get this thing open??" Alice asked us, her french accent flowing beautifully.
I shook my head, sighing. Professor Weasley entered the tent, smiling politely. "You have all done well in your first task. What you hold is a clue to the next task, so to help you better prepare for it. As I'm sure you've noticed, it won't open on its own. It's up to you to figure out how it unlocks."
I groaned, slipping the locket around my neck for safekeeping. "Emmy, you have a guest." Professor Weasley informed me. I looked at her confused before Anne stepped into the tent. "Anne!" I said happily, leaping up and racing to envelop her in a hug.
She giggled, carefully hugging me back. "It's so good to see you, my friend! It's been too long." I took her hand, the grin on my face so wide I worried that my face would snap in half. "How have you been? It's been a while since your last letter!"
Anne looked toward the other competitors shyly, to which I understood. She wanted us to catch up alone. "Let me just get changed first, then I'll join you outside."
