I ran for a long time, panicked, before remembering I had magic. I took a breath, turning toward what was now a wave of lost, broken and forgotten dolls, each one having the voice of a child begging for me to play with them. "INCENDIO!"I cried, aiming at all of them and pivoting to ensure I got every single doll.
I made sure to look over the entire surrounding area, sighing in a rare moment of relief once they were all gone, before backtracking to see if I could find that woman. Who was she? I felt my skin begin to crawl, hearing the crackle of lightning, stepping quickly to get out of the way.
I watched as lightning boomed, hitting the ground where I had been standing. "Come out and face me!" I called, sounding a lot more confident than I felt. I watched as she sauntered out from behind a tree, seeming to come from nowhere.
"You're no fun." she whined, crossing her arms and pouted at me. I focused my wand on her. "Answers. Who are you? And what the hell do you want with me?" As she leaned on the tree, she smiled. "You caught me. Fine. I'm Penelope. Satisfied?" I glared at her.
"You know damn well I'm not." "What're you gonna do? You're too much of a goodie two shoes to actually hurt me." She stepped closer, I finally got a better look at her. She was an adult, but still young, her ashy blonde hair fell loose down to the small of her back. She was an Ashwinder. I recognised her clothing from the many times ashwinder poachers had picked a fight back at hogwarts.
"You worked for Rookwood." I said more to myself than her. She clapped her hands in a slow manner. "Clever girl. What else?" Was she asking me to try and figure out who she was? I looked her over more, taking the chance to see what I could learn as she didn't seem to be attacking me.
"You're a younger woman, but you're not a teenager, you have a wedding ring on your finger so you're married, and you're of a more slender frame, meaning you do majority of your fighting in your Animagus form or from far away." She stepped closer, her eyes trained on me like a wild animal going in for the kill. "What else?" She asked me, her tone sickly sweet.
I looked her over again, but found nothing else. "I'll give you a hint. I don't need to wear this anymore." She lifted her ring finger, showing off her wedding ring. My blood ran cold at the realization of her motive. Of the reason she wanted to drive me insane before killing me.
"You're Rookwood's wife..."I trailed, and she squealed in delight. It made sense now. All of it. "I couldn't just come on my own, so I sent a friend of mine to do some recon back at Hogwarts. That Ashwinder you almost killed? Remember?
Back when you and your boyfriends were attacked by that troll? He was sent by me, to see how powerful you were. I got to observe first hand how good you are in a fight, and how easy you are to take down. Now. Let's play a game. You run, and I'll try to find you. And if I do, I will use the cruciatus curse on you until you beg for death. Which, let's be honest, you absolutely deserve."
I swallowed hard. "What makes you think I'll play your game?" "because you're no fun otherwise, and I have to find a new way to make killing you fun." like hell. "And if I just take you on now?" "then you will die quickly."
A nearby explosion boomed throughout the forest, the squealing of spiders on fire ringing throughout the night air. I took off, casting a disillusionment charm on myself and not stopping. I headed toward the explosion, hoping that it was caused by the boys.
I also hoped it would confuse Penelope, as most would try to head back to the safety of the house. Staying in the shadows, I could see one of the acromantulas scurrying around as Sebastian cast more spells at it, trying to kill it.
Ominis was nowhere to be found, but I hoped that he was nearby. The other Acromantula was floating in the air, wiggling its legs to try and get itself down so as to attack Sebastian to eat him. I crept closer, quietly casting confringo as to set the spider on fire. As the spider squealed, Sebastian turned in surprise.
"I'm here Seb, she's after me. I'll hide here until the spiders are dead." He didn't say anything, but gave the smallest of nods in case he was being watched. I watched as the spiders squealed and squirmed, their big size meaning nothing now that their weakness was being used against them.
I felt a strange sense of satisfaction and relief that two of her weapons that had been used to torment me had been taken care of. The thought of harvesting their fangs for potion ingredients came to mind, before I shook my head. One thing at a time.
I heard a screech, and turned to see the black wolf lunging toward Sebastian. "Sebastian look out!" I cried, my disillusionment charm falling as I raced between them, casting protego to thrust her away. She hit the ground forcefully, but was back up in seconds. She snapped her jaws, circling us.
"I found you." I heard her chuckle. I looked down at her angrily, my back against Sebastian's. "I never agreed to your dumb game. So if you're gonna fight me, stop being a coward and do it!" I snapped back. Sebastian looked at me in surprise, before scowling and pointing his wand toward the wolf.
"So you're the one who's been tormenting her." I watched her shift back into human form, laughing. "I am. What're you gonna do about it pretty boy?" Sebastian moved toward her, wand held high. "Diffindo!" She simply laughed again and moved out of the way.
"Whether you agreed to it or not sweetie, we were playing a game, and I won. Step aside twat, while I claim my prize." She waved her wand again, another round of dolls crawled up from the earth, pulling Sebastian to the ground.
I held firm, letting her come closer. "Darling no! Run!" Sebastian cried, helpless as his arms were pinned to his sides. "No! She wants to cast crucio on me? Let her do it!" I yelled, to which she looked stunned. "You clearly have never felt it before honey, you're about to regret those words."
