The fire hydrant felt honored by his job. He had a duty, to be there when the firefighters call upon him. One day they would arrive, needing him to supply all the water they could ask for, their weapons in a war against fire, and he wouldn't let them down.
But when he was finally activated, it wasn't to fight fire. It was a hot summer day and he spewed water into the street so that the neighborhood boys and girls could cool off. The hydrant was pissed at this new job, until he saw the smiles on their faces.
