The Gulfstream swept out over the French coastline and commenced tracking across the North Atlantic Ocean headed for the Caribbean. Adam and Caren sat together on a small plush leather lounge near the rear of the cabin.
"Can I get you anything?"
Adam looked up. "The usual for me thanks, Amanda."
"A juice perhaps," Caren added.
"How's your arm, are you quite comfortable?"
Caren touched her plaster cast. "It feels fine at the moment, thanks."
"Let me know if I can get you anything," Amanda added before retreating behind a partition.
"Yes, don't worry about your arm; I have doctors in the US that can see to it."
"Where are we going now?"
"To an island called Anguilla."
"Wow! When I left Australia I had no idea I would end up flying in a private jet to an island. Is that where Benjamin is?"
"Yes at the moment."
They fell quiet as Amanda returned and placed two drinks onto the polished surface of a side table next to them.
"We left Paris in a hurry...you promised me shopping and romantic dinners," Caren teased once they were alone again.
When Adam remained sullen Caren continued. "They're onto you, aren't they?"
"It was something Ted said." Adam finally spoke. "He seemed so...well...determined. He is a very courageous and honorable guy. Clever too - stands up for what he believes in and has good principles. I like that in a person. It's a shame..."
"Adam...no...you promised me. I would not have come with you if I had known."
"I have no choice. I don't know what he will do, or what incrimination he will direct at me. I cannot afford the risk."
"I am begging you Adam, please you have to stop." Caren pleaded, her face reddening.
"How can I continue my work? The only other possible alternative is to change my identity and disappear. Retreat to South America perhaps and operate from there."
Caren's eyes moistened and she turned to face Adam. "Please, you have to stop thinking like that. I can't do it anymore. I'm exhausted and my life is in ruins. I'm always frightened and I'm scared of the future. I have no future if you continue. It was a miracle Laura came into my life. I don't want them hurt."
"I...I had no idea."
"Of course you don't...how would you?" Caren put her hand up to cover her quivering lips. Adam leant towards her and placed an arm around her shoulder. "All that you have and all that you have been doing is just an illusion...a pretense." She continued between sobs.
Adam pulled away. "What?" He studied her face. "That's preposterous...I don't understand."
"That's it you don't understand. You never have, and that's what I've been trying to tell you."
"What is it...what is so important? Caren you are worrying me."
She clawed at the front of his sweater with trembling hands. Her cheeks streaked with tears.
"Adam, I killed Roxley Hart that night. It was me...not you."
