~1975 September 2nd~
I rested my head in my hands as Miss Liren continued to teach. Mrs. Emily wasn’t here today, and so she had to teach the class herself. The other kids had been rambunctious for practically the whole day, and were really trying Miss Liren’s patience. But honestly, it felt like everyday we’d been trying her patience. Even if it was an unusually calm and peaceful day, she was still irritated. So Mrs. Emily would take care of us all. And she never really lost her patience. But she was sick today. “So, if you take B-E-D, you get the word ‘bed’. But if you take the letters B-A-D, you’ll get ‘bad’. Understood?” Everyone nodded, understanding. She sighed, then used the pointer again. “B-I-D spells ‘bid’, and B-U-D spells ‘bud’. Any questions?” A kid named Simon raised his hand. Miss Liren looked down at him, probably immediately regretting asking if anyone had questions.
“Yes, Simon?” “My dad calls me bud sometimes!” He shared happily. Miss Liren sighed, and rolled her eyes. “That’s nice to hear, Simon. Anyone have an actual question?” No one else raised their hand, and after scanning the class to make sure, she nodded. “Alright then, let's head onto numbers,” She said, erasing the words she’d written on the chalkboard. She started writing again, and each time she’d accidentally scrape the chalk against the board incorrectly, it made a screeching sound. I hated the screeching sound, and would cover my ears to try and keep from hearing it. At the time, I didn’t know it was a sensory issue. “So, who can guess the answer to 4+4? None of you should, because you haven’t learnt it ye-” “8,” I answered without hesitation. She paused, and looked around at us. “Who answered?” A girl in front of me pointed behind herself, directly at me.
Miss Liren’s eyes landed on me, and she glared a bit. She stopped pointing at the board. “Alright then. What about 4-4?” “0,” I smiled, happy I was finally able to answer in class. Micheal looked over at me, in a bit of amazement, and that made me feel even better. But Miss Liren glared more. “What about 8-4?” “4!” I answered, putting four fingers up into the air. Suddenly, Miss Liren made her way to me quickly, pulled me up off the carpet we’d all been sitting on, and pulled me behind her. I stumbled a bit, but I was more worried about my hand. The way she was gripping it, it hurt, cause I only had four fingers held out. “M-Miss Liren, you’re hurting me-!” I cried out a bit. I looked back at the kids sitting on the carpet still, watching it all unfold in front of them. She violently threw open one of the drawers in her desk that had a lock on it, and pulled out a ruler. I watched in horror as he raised it, and brought it down on my arm.
I winced, and screamed, but she covered my mouth. Then after she had hit my arm eight times, she stopped, put her ruler back into her drawer, and locked it shut. She then pulled me back over to the carpet, made me sit down, and picked up the pointer. Before she went to teach, she noticed that the kids were staring at me, unsure how to react to what just happened. “Attention up here please, or I will do the same to all of you. You wouldn’t want to get in trouble like Elijah, would we class?” Everyone looked up at the board, and shook their heads no. Everyone, except for one. Micheal. Miss Liren, noticing, walked over to Micheal, and looked down at him. “Micheal Afton. Did I make myself clear that you’re supposed to be paying attention to me, and nothing else?” He glanced up at her, and shook his head no.
She glared at him, and violently pulled him up to his feet, dragging him over to her desk. Micheal willingly followed her to her desk, and looked back at me. He put a thumbs up quickly, smiled, then resumed following her. She’d be fired later that week because of a report of cuts on Micheal’s arms, from Micheal’s mother.
