Aditya parked his car in the hospital lot and checked his watch. It was 6:15 a.m. She would be wrapping up her night shift soon.
Stepping out of the car, he walked into the hospital lobby, nodding at the receptionist who immediately recognized him.
“Good morning, Mr. Singhania. She is in room 12.You can go ahead,” she said with a friendly smile.
“Thank you. Have a good day,” he replied before heading down the corridor. He spotted her through the glass window of the room.
Taniya was standing by a patient’s bed, wearing her blue scrubs and white coat. Her long black hair were tied in a bun and few loose strands were falling gently on her face.
She was holding the hand of the little boy laying on the bed while talking to his mother with a smile on her face.
Aditya knocked lightly on the door and her head turned at the sound. The tiredness in her features melted into a smile as she excused herself and walked towards him.
“Hi,” he said, “How was your night?”
“Busy,” she replied, her smile widening. “A few critical cases but they’re stable now. How about you? Slept well?”
“Yes…Let's go” Aditya said and Taniya nodded in return. She held his hand and leaned a bit into his shoulder as they started walking. “I wanted to tell you something,” he began“Actually, Ma-”
Before he could finish, they heard a scream coming from the room she was previously in. Aditya saw Taniya and a few other nurses and doctors running towards the room.
Aditya sat on the nearby bench, waiting as Taniya did her work.Minutes later, the door to the room opened again and Taniya walked outside, discussing something with a nurse.
She walked to him, still breathing heavily as she took his hand without a word.
“Come,” she said softly. “I’ll get changed.”He nodded and they both walked towards her cabin.
He waited by her cabin until she came out with her clothes changed and her hair now untied and cascading around her shoulders.
“Let’s go home. You need rest,” Aditya said, offering her hand.
She nodded and they left together, greeting the staff on their way out.
As they reached the car, Aditya opened the door for her and took out a bouquet of white tulips he had gotten for her on his way.
The sight of the flowers brought a huge, ear to ear smile on Taniya’s face.
“Thank you…These are so pretty” Taniya says and Aditya just nodded in response with a smile.
He looked at her for the last time before going to his side of the car and sat down behind the wheel.
The drive home was quiet. Taniya was toying with the flowers in her lap as the early morning sunlight spilled through the windshield. The radio played soft bollywood songs until they reached home.
As they entered home, they saw that the whole family was gathered at the breakfast table.
“Good morning,” Taniya greeted.“Good morning,” Kavya replied warmly.
“Sit, eat something and then you can go rest.”Taniya sat beside Naira while Aditya took the seat next to her.
Halfway through breakfast, Kavya spoke up.“Beta, we’ve decided you two should go on your honeymoon next week.”Taniya choked on her water, coughing hard as everyone turned toward her.
