It was evening when he came back home and after parking the car in the garage he went inside. Without sparing a glance at Veer and Naira-who were bickering about something in the living room-he quietly climbed the stairs and headed straight to his room.
He had a paper bag in his hand. Inside was a takeout container with warm pancakes that he had picked up on the way home for her.
He pushed open the door and was about to call her name but stopped cold at the sound of loud and strained coughing echoing from the washroom.
His brows knit in worry as he placed the bag on the bed and followed the sound.
The washroom door was slightly ajar and he could see Taniya hunched over the sink while gripping the edges with trembling hands.
Her hair was disheveled, her eyes red and watery and her whole body was shaking as if she was choking on something and struggling to breathe.
His heart slammed against his ribs as he rushed to her side.
" Are you okay?" he asked urgently, his hand moving instinctively to rub her back in soothing circles.
"How did this happen? Why didn't you tell me? Are you sick? Is this why you asked me not to pick you up?" His questions came rapid-fire, panic lacing every word.
Taniya shook her head weakly, still leaning against the sink as he supported her. She was feeling like as if she would vomit her guts out.
She cupped water in her hands and rinsed her mouth before whispering, "I'm fine. It's probably just something I ate."
He didn't believe her even for a second but he didn't press further.
Instead, he grabbed a nearby towel and gently wiped her mouth while she was still catching her breath.
"You should lie down," he said softly, concern threading through every word.
Taniya nodded and bent to wash her face properly but her hair kept falling forward. "Can you grab a hair tie from my bag?"
Aditya nodded, relieved to do something useful. After making sure she could stand on her own, he stepped out of the washroom.
He spotted her bag on the couch and began rummaging through it.
His fingers closed around a hair tie but something else caught his eye.
A folded sheet of paper.
He would've ignored it but the familiar lab logo at the top made his heart skip a beat. It was a lab report. His fingers hesitated before pulling it out. A sick feeling stirred in his gut.
His first thought was that she was sick and was hiding it from him.
His eyes scanned the document, searching for answers until a single word pulled the ground out from beneath him.
Positive.
His breath hitched as his eyes moved over the page again, catching other details like estimated weeks, test date but he couldn't look away from that one word.
A thousand thoughts raced through his mind, but he couldn't focus on any of them. His chest tightened as all emotions came rushing in all at once.
He was in a state of shock, disbelief and felt a little bit hurt.
"She is pregnant and didn't tell me?" he whispered to no one but himself.
He sat there for a moment. He was stunned and only silence was roaring in his ears as he began thinking of reasons why didn't she tell him.
