Grantaire was hurt. Not physically, but in a romantic sense. Enjolras was his soulmate. When a child is born a name is inked on their body, this is the name of their soulmate. Enjolras and Grantaire were supposed to be soulmates, but Enjolras had left him for a woman. A woman! Not just any woman, but Grantaire's now ex-best friend, Èponine.

He rose the bottle to his lips and let the contents burn down the back of his throat. Grantaire sat at his canvas, painting Enjolras. However he had no red paint. The dark voices in his head told him to do it, so he did. Grantaire cut into his own skin, with a sharp shard of a broken, empty bottle. He used his own blood to paint the red jacket of the leader.

When he was done Grantaire wrote a small note and attached it to his painting. Then using the same piece of glass he had before he made a cut on his soulmate tattoo, which was placed right over his heart. It was not long before Grantaire had killed himself.

Èponine and Enjolras came around the next day to find the door unlocked and Grantaire dead on the ground. Enjolras looked at the painting and saw the note attached to it.

'Can't you see how devoted I am to you?' It read.

Enjolras took a second look at the painting before realising it was Grantaire's blood and he saw the cuts Grantaire had inflicted on himself. The one with his own name cut in half staining his mind. Enjolras knelt down next to Grantaire's body and moved it so Grantaire's head was in his lap. He let out a cry and then a sob, Enjolras regretted all decisions after leaving his soulmate.
