wooo

i woke up with the overwhelming urge to write

so, superhero / vigilante au!!

~

The elusive Xelqua is sitting on a building, swinging his legs quietly. It's midnight, and the moon hangs over the vigilante.

His wings are folded neatly, two pairs, one pitch black and crackling with the purple of the void, the other pure. Xelqua finds it funny one pair stayed pure, even after he abandoned the admins.

Xelqua is waiting for Hawkeye, perhaps the most famous hero to roam. Hawkeye needed information, Xelqua needed money. It's a fair trade-off.

( No, no it isn't. Xelqua won't sell out Moonlit.)

There's footsteps behind him now.

"Hawkeye,"

" Xelqua! Pretty night out, isn't it?"

Xelqua rolls his eyes. Hawkeye always changes to smooth small talk. Xelqua knows he's just trying to get every bit of information out of him.

It doesn't matter. They're not even, really, on the same page.

Hawkeye's sat down next to him, with his stupid white-tooth grin. The man's stupid, really, if he thinks Xelqua would sell-out anyone.

Sure, it may seem as though he has no connection to any of them, not Moonlit or Goatfather or Mad King.

...

Xelqua's just that good at hiding. I mean, is it shocking, with how long he's been running? It's important to prefect two skills, after all.

Hawkeye seems to notice his thoughtfulness.

" Whatcha thinking 'bout, birdie?"

Hawkeye's leaning on his shoulder now. He flinches away, staring into kind green eyes.

" Oh! sorry, i won't touch ya there again" ( shoutout to my frien who noticed i didn't want to be touched one day and asked, slayyyy )

" Let's get on with the mission, shall we?"

Xelqua readies himself to jump off the building, unpleasantly surprised by Hawkeye. His wings spread wide, and he launches into the air. Hawkeye follows closely behind on his own glider, still attempting conversation.

" You know, you would've made an excellent hero! You're dark & mysterious, but well intentioned!"

" I am not a hero."

Xelqua hissed this, his tone biting and telling Hawkeye to promptly fuck-off. Hawkeye doesn't get the memo.

" Why aren't you a hero, though?"

Images flash through Xelqua's mind- a crashed bus, three ropes hanging in a school hall, blue clothes, dark labs and darker fates...

" I'm. Not. A. Hero."

Xelqua's tone clearly has enough finality in it now. Hawkeye drops the subject.

Xelqua can feel their eyes on him, trying to study what's deep inside.

~

They land at the warehouse, a smooth, practiced motion. Xelqua has been here many, many times before.

" So we can go in..?"

" Idiots don't lock it, like when teens come and fuck with shit."

Hawkeye doesn't seem to really believe it, but that's not what matters. Besides, Xelqua is telling the 'truth', most of the villains are teenagers or abit older.

Hawkeye steps in first. Xelqua watches. He sips a regeneration potion, waiting for the very moment...

Hawkeye trips. He trips on a small line of string.

...

A small line of string connected to a massive explosion.

It's almost instantaneous, the explosion. Bright white hitting and consuming everything around it in a roaring inferno. Xelqua is thrown, crashing under debris as the fire forces the building itself to crumble.

He doesn't know where Hawkeye lands, but he can tell it's not good.

Xelqua should feel so, so happy. He's done it, right?

Then he hears a voice.

"xELQUA??? HELLO? YOU OK-"

His eyes widen. Somehow, someway, Hawkeye was checking on him. He had to have seen the potion, the intent, the lies and smooth words.

Hawkeye was still checking on him.

Somehow, someway, Hawkeye was walking towards the pile of rubble where Xelqua was buried.  Somehow, someway, Hawkeye was bringing him towards light.

" xelqua! oh, thank heavens!"

Hawkeye pulled Xelqua out of the rubble, pulling him into a hug.

What?

Xelqua- Xelqua didn't deserve this sympathy. He caused it, he caused this-

" ... why...?"

" Well, I had to make sure my buddy was fine!"

Xelqua stares at him with a look, a scarred look of confusion and past hurts, and guilt.

Hawkeye notices this. He noticed everything.

He noticed how Xelqua thought he'd lost the chance to be a hero.

And Hawkeye, Hawkeye noticed the fact he'd be much better off as one.

"..oh"

Is Xelqua's simple reply. It doesn't matter, though, because Hawkeye promptly picks him up wedding-style and they start to make their way out of the building, who'd mostly burnt out.

It's funny, isn't it? How easily the two lie, yet how different the purposes are?

..

"You can't trust a single thing I say"
