Scar was running. He was running from a lot of things, a constant war in his heart. Also, he's running from Bdubs.
It was the zombie apocalypse. Somehow, their server had turned to this. Normally, - No, millions of years ago- Scar would be running, running with Grian. He still treasures those warm memories of cold dessert nights, feathers littering everything.
It's funny, how you loved me..
Then forgot so suddenly..
Not anymore. Once upon a time, they'd been a power couple (swerve), now, they're just a joke. A harsh pairing from the Gods who decided they wished to crack Scar's heart just a little bit more.
No, don't get me wrong, Scar was a resilient person. Hell, he'd lost use of both his legs, mastered magic, regained them, toyed with death in literal death games, and always made risky decisions.
Scar, despite everything, had a heart of gold.
But, even gold rusts, even gold can crack and fracture and shatter into a million tiny little pieces.
Gold, especially, because it's the fragilest metal of them all.
( jump, kick rocks into his face..)
Scar may be gold, but Grian is titanium. Titanium is everything Scar wants to be, careful, strong, unwilling & prepared to fight for his opinions.
Titanium is everything Scar isn't, cold, closed off. Unbreakable.
What Scar doesn't know is that, truly, Grian wasn't originally titanium. Once, he was a shimmering gold too.
A being who could love everyone unconditionally, putting full trust into the craziest of ideas.
What Scar doesn't know is that Grian made himself titanium. He let the gold rust and crack until one day, it was too vulnerable. Then Grian built up those little walls, desperately trying to polish what was far too gone.
Scar doesn't know much. He doesn't know why Grian changed, he doesn't know why it's so easy to hide the gold, to pretend (duck), he doesn't know why it's so hard, too, to change. To build up those same walls like Grian.
He does know, however, that his heart, a section of that shimmery gold, is reserved just for Grian.
He does know, that he couldn't bear to seal that up.
He hates that he can't, that he still chases after Grian as though something could change. Grian was titanium, and titanium didn't rust, it didn't creak or groan or stagger.
Titanium never changed. It stayed in place, even with every crack or dent or scratch.
...
Scar didn't manage to duck in time.

Grian was running. He was running like he ran from Sam, from the Watchers. He was running, again, from everything he held dear.
The thing about Grian? He was like a child at the beach, playing silly games. Taunting the waves to just try and touch him, try to wrap around him and drag him down, but running before it ever got too close.
̷b̷̷e̷̷f̷̷o̷̷r̷̷e̷ ̷t̷̷h̷̷e̷̷y̷ ̷g̷̷o̷̷t̷ ̷t̷̷o̷ ̷c̷̷l̷̷o̷̷s̷̷e̷
Grian wasn't strong, he wasn't immovable. Grian was timid, a cornered animal.
The thing about cornered animals? Cornered animals always lash out. Perhaps they don't want to, perhaps they understand the motive of their cornerer. It never matters, because cornered animals will lash out until they aren't cornered anymore.
Sometimes, however, animals need to be cornered. They need to be snatched up, taken care of. The animal doesn't know, don't realize they need this person, that their fear is misguided.
So, the animal lashes out.
...
Grian lashes out. He lashes out because he is afraid. Because he is the cornered animal, and experience - the learning curve for the animals - informs him that this person's intentions are bad, horrible.
Scar didn't know this, he didn't realize that he was cornering Grian. Because Scar didn't see, he didn't see the small, scrappy animal inside Grian.
Scar always thought Grian was titanium, large and strong.
Grian is not titanium. Grian is a kitten, scattering down an alleyway, chased by a large & optimistic man. Grian is a kitten, a kitten starved and tormented by other men.
Grian built walls to protect the kitten. Grian, the kitten, used to love running and jumping and playing with others. He loved the thrill, the companionship.
Till one day, the ship sank. It burned, a horrid sight of smoke and betrayal and failure.
The kitten was frightened, frightened by the bright fire. His fear brought him down, down, down.
Grian never wanted to feel fear again.
So he built those walls, those safeguards. If they prevented anything, everything from reaching him, his kitten, so be it.
His kitten did not agree. His kitten wanted to run and play and leap again, wanted to curl up on Scar's lap because Scar was safe, home, good, yes. His kitten wanted to do everything a million times over, even if the fire sparked and ships burned. His kitten knew no fear, only curiosity.
Sadly, curiosity killed the cat.
Grian is climbing now, up a ladder. He'd managed to loose whoever had been chasing him (l̷̷i̷̷k̷̷e̷ ̷e̷̷v̷̷e̷̷r̷̷y̷̷o̷̷n̷̷e̷) and now, now he was safe. His brain said he was safe, he was ok.
Why didn't his heart, his kitten, agree?
...
Grian tucked himself in the corner.
...
It was raining.
...
The dark clouds felt like a manifestation of Grian. Here he was, hidden in his cobble box, shivering & scared.
Here he was, a frightened kitten, guided by the cruel strikes of thunder that dictated his actions.
Here he was, all alone.
Here he was, rusting.
...
Because that's the thing, the thing about people.
They're never truly, truly whole.
