Two birds, on a wire..
Scar flared his gentle, small little vex wings. They could expand, of course, with the help of magic.
The scientists don't want them to expand. They wanted Scar & his little avian buddy to stay put, balancing on their moods & the actual wings-of-fire-esque platform. Around his arm, there's a red string, forcing them together.
Forever.
But that doesn't matter, anymore. Now, the chains have clattered to the ground, now is the time to escape.
He lets his wings expand, for the first time in eternity, and pushes off the smooth stone of his past home.
The avian doesn't budge.
" birdie? you coming?"
" huh- yes. just, let me..."
He is a liar.
And Scar just nods, he just smiles at the avian. Vaguely, time presses down on him, but Scar ignores it.
He trusts his gut.
(He really shouldn't trust, these days. The bandages wrapped around his limbs agree.)
He's sure, so sure, that the avian will come. Take off, fly away with Scar, always tied together. Scar doesn't care that he'll never know much about the parrot, or that they'd be trapped, in the same but oh-so different box.
I won't let go of your hand..
...
There's gunshots in the distance. Time presses harder, making its presence known.
They need to escape.
" cmon, birdie."
The Avian looks away from Scar, frowning. It's not just a frown, it's soul-deep, speaking a language- spinning a tale- that Scar can't hope to understand.
" The sky is overcast,
I'm sorry."
It's barely a whisper, the ghost of such important words floating from the avian's lips.
" Birdie?"
Scar tries to smile, tries to joke. He tugs the string.
The avian meets his eyes. His frown is gone, replaced by a sad, sweet smile.
No.
What?
Scar drifts closer to their little platform. The avian has something in his hand. The sickly glint of iron makes itself visible to Scar.
" birdie? birdie?"
".. the names Grian."
Tears are bubbling in his blue, ocean eyes. Scar can feel the panic overwhelm him. He lunges forward..
I won't let go of your hand
~
The thunder of people running. It's a thrill, a high. Grian grins, spreading his wings. They're dulled from his time in this place, but that doesn't matter.
What matters is now. His platform is shaking, quaking. It's a sharp change, the best 180 anyone could've asked for. He tugs lightly on the blue string, trailing down to his friend, his spouse, his only one.
Taurtis.
" Grian, Grian, it's happening. It's finally happening!"
" I know, honey. We need to get out. Are you ready?"
Taurtis flexes his own wings, pure manifestations of magic surging through his veins. Magic he shouldn't have, magic that didn't truly belong to him. Magic he only had because of this stupid fucking place.
But it was fine, because they are escaping.
They will be free.
Say that they're always gonna stay together..
Suddenly, they're soaring through the air. Wind whizzes past, twirling with Grian's hair and sifting through his feathers. It's ironic, the sun fading to darkness behind them as they leave the plain white building that shaped so much of their life.
Grian can hear the trivial yelling underneath him, screaming to stop the rebellion, the liberation. He doesn't care, he'll never have to care again, because he'll be free.
He's just a liar...
The stone platforms are fading behind them. Taurtis is grinning, a grin Grian has never seen before.
A grin he can't wait to see again.
And the other...
Then the sinking feeling. No, it's not a feeling. The wind has changed, it no longer runs through his feathers, it shoves him up.
They are falling.
They are falling, fast.
Grian can't see, the light of day far too gone. He crashes, the branches ripping through delicate muscle and bone and feather. He screams in pain before they finally reach the ground.
Tears cloud his vision. There's footsteps, ominous, warning footsteps getting closer & closer..
The blue wire is still there, always there. Grian crawls, following it.
..
One blink.
Two blinks.
Taurtis lays there, blood seeping from him. He's been shot. The wound is in his shoulder, a clear shot.
Grian screams. He pulls Taurtis closer, breathily much to fast. Grief clouds everything, and Taurtis smiles up at him.
" d-don't worry, taurtis, it'll be ok, baby, i swear.."
( He is a liar.)
Taurtis has that same grin from earlier. There are still tears pooling in his eyes, obstructing his vision.
"... i'm sorry, birdie."
The echoing call, of grief, loss, hopelessness, and sadness rings out through the forest. Grian clutches Taurtis' body, shaking him and screaming and sobbing because he CAN'T BE GONE.
He stays like that, screaming and shaking, until the Scientists find him. Until they sever the rope and drag him away.
~
...
Two birds on a wire.
Scar shakes and scream and sobs, just like Grian did, oh-so long ago. He mutters words, fake promises.
One tries to fly away
He's clutching Grian's body, watching the blood seep through his sweater collar. The footsteps are growing closer.
...
Scar gives Grian, with his attitude and solitary personality and shining wings, one last little smile.
Then, he flys away.
And the other..
~
wooo depressing things!!
