you have heard this song before :)
modern city AU
~
Grian clutched the semi-crumbled papers in his hands, the ones his new friend X had just given him.
The ones that revealed the Watcher's sick plan for him.
..
You see, Grian was born into the Watcher cult. He was hailed as the chosen one, the martyr. His best friend, Xeyla, was meant to make sure he stayed pure. That he didn't break any rules, didn't even move a clipped feather out of place.
Grian loved Xeyla, he loved the Watchers. They taught him everything, just like a father. Grian admired them all, their gorgeous purple wings ( contrasting his, bright as flame), their cunning and ancient wisdom. Their forgiving. Grian aspired to be like that, free from petty & jealousy.
Now?
Grian couldn't want anything else as to run away.
He clutched the papers harder, the papers dictating how ' The Sun Child' should be handled. How the sacrifice should be handled. Afterall, one of pure light is meant to bow to ones of pure darkness. Grian thought they'd been good, he boasted to others about the qualities shared between every Watched.
Grian had trusted them, he thought they'd never lie.
Grian can't wait for this place to go sky-high.
..
I loved you, I loved you,
Grian loved them. It's true.
Grian looked around his room, the same room he shared with Xeyla. He'd lived here, he'd loved here. He thought it was true. Stupid, stupid. He could feel hot tears run down his cheeks. Grian wanted with all his heart to stay, but he couldn't.
He was just a fucking pawn.
~
Grian had been hailed, bowed too. He'd been shown off & paraded, he'd been proud to show his mastery of magic & combat. He loved studying different languages, descriptions of the sky, and always, alway, magic. He loved studying the principles of kindness & leadership.
If only they could be what he pretended they are.
When Grian had begged for the new member to be put in his dorm, he never expected them to destroy his entire life. He'd thought the new guy was excited to see their values, their way of life.
Grian wished he'd never even interacted. That he was still ignorant, still thinking his silly little thoughts & showing off their values.
He wished everything would just go away.
'cause we're so fucking mean, we're elitist, we're as flawed as any church.
And this bullshit west coast dogma has a higher fucking net worth.
Grian can hear the footsteps of Xeyla, coming to check on him.
" Grian..?"
Grian turned slowly to face her. Her, the real perfect one, with her deep purple wings and glowing eyes.
" I bit the apple, 'cause I loved you, and why would you lie? Then I realized, you're just as naive as I am-"
Grian shoved the papers into her chest, taking off down the hall. The horror on Xeyla's expression as she realized what he had found was one Grian would relish.
She chased after him.
It didn't take long for Xeyla to corner Grian. She knew the place inside & out, Grian was never expected to know anything.
" YOU DUMB BITCH, I LOVED YOU, I LOVED YOU, I LOVED YOU, IT'S TRUE."
" .. grian,"
Xeyla approached, a look of motherly ' I was protecting you!' On her face. Grian shoved her down, racing through the halls again. He ran through the Sanctuary, sparing a glance at the carefully constructed glass murals. Just a few hours ago, he'd admired them.
Oh god, how Grian wanted to shatter those shitty, mismatched pieces.
He needed to escape.
~
Sure, Grian had done bad things. It's a given, being in a dramatic & insane cult. Sure, you could argue he deserved the same fate as the others- locked up or killed. Grian wouldn't argue, he wouldn't speak.
He'd be too busy screaming at the Watchers, begging him to help them.
I don't need jackshit from you,
So when I speak, you bet your life, my words are true.
Many years later, he'd speak to them, the ones tainted by their existence. He'd tell them that, back then, he would've died for any Watched there. He'd make such a speech out of it, of his childhood.
He'd finish with one line.
As I see it, you're a DICK.
This is not the future.
~
Guards had started chasing Grian. He just had to make it to the exit. He could hear the priest from behind, begging him, pleading, telling him that it was a simple slipup. A prank.
" FUCK YOUR MOSAICS, FUCK YOUR CULT, FUCK YOUR VALUES & FUCK YOUR CULT AGAIN. "
He'd screamed. He was almost out, to the world. The world he'd been cruelly snatched from (LIKE UR MOMS WIG-) , the world with truths. The world without shitty fabrication.
" STOP RUNNING, XELQUA. YOUR GOING TO TEAR HUMANITY APART. YOU.
YOU
COULD'VE
BEEN
OUR
BRAND-NEW START."
The priest's voice echoed, haunted by something. Something bigger. It chilled Grian to the bone. He kept running, even if all of him was desperate to go back & cling to the Watchers. Because he loved them, so much. Even if it was all fake.
Even if he knew it was a lie, he still did.
..
Grian's at the entrance, just barely. He can see the light shining from the compound's entrance. It was glorious.
He could still see the drab black & purple that made up every ounce of this shitty room. He could hear his breath getting quicker. The doors were unlocked.
He can hear his footsteps pounding on the floor, when suddenly, the sound changed. The sights change. A gorgeous forest gazed at him with its lazy, calm eye. His footsteps crashed into soft mud.
He could see the shaky summer trees.
Grian kept running.
He didn't remember when he stopped, when the police got there. When Grian saw X again, realizing the man had gone undercover. Grian could just remember the freeing feeling of light, of safety.
True safety.
