Grian cracked open an eye to see a demolished ship. The world twisted and turned, forcing Grian to blink quite a few times before it finally settled.
He was lying on sand. Dark oak planks were scattered around. They'd crashed. He stood up, shaking bright wings and walking forward. There's talking. Grian approaches it, finding his crew.
What was left of his crew, anyway.
Martyn looked at him with fury in his eyes, something burning underneath deep forest green. Have his eyes always been so green?
A thought for another time.
Martyn approaches, jabbing a finger in Grian's chest.
"Tell me you did not know that would happen,"
His voice is full of a deep sadness. Tears prick at his eyes. Everyone is staring at Grian.
"Say that you didn't know how that would end,"
It's not a plead. Martyn is desperately trying to pretend as though Grian's mistakes didn't lead to this. This fate of fear and guilt, all consuming like the waves that lapped at their destroyed ship.
The silence only makes his first mate angrier. Sadder, maybe.
"Look me in the eyes & tell me, captain.."
Grian looked up, studying his crew. He doesn't look at Martyn.
"THAT YOU DID NOT JUST SACRIFICE 6 MEN."
Martyn shoved Grian back. He was encircled by his remaining friends, faces fading to blazing angry eyes and dark shadows around him.
"Use your wits to try and say I'm crazy & mad,"
Grian backs up, staring with wide, fearful eyes as Martyn approached him, throwing his hands around to emphasize his speech. Always a theaterkid, huh?
"That this is all some trick the gods have sent,"
Grian could feel his eyes flash purple, by accident. Martyn notices it. He's still backing up, tears of panic pricking in his blue eyes.
"Tell me you did not miss home so painfully bad,"
Someone trips him. He crashes into the rough sand, starting to sob. Martyn is reaching for his sword. No, he has to turn this around-
"THAT YOU GAVE UP THE LIVES 6 OF OUR FRIENDS!"
He gulped, blinking. The world seemed to lag, for a moment.
"When we fought Xunle, you were quick to hatch a plan!"
He, he remembered that. The towering figure of Xunle, crashing onto the floor. Glimpses of a deep blue, cyan realm. The downside up, as he now knew. All too well.
"And when we fought with Xonyd, it was you who left behind no man!"
Xonyd.. purple wings and an elegant frame. Their grin and expansive library, towering and full of books. Books that doubled as weapons, crashing down and swarming victims.
"But when we saw these Watchers, we didn't take a stand,"
Martyn was looking at his hands, moving them and trying to puzzle out the words. The emotions.
