"Oh, finally." My eyes shut at the breeze that flew over me; the chilly weather and the cloudy skies that just reminded me of my old life. "Home sweet home."
My smile grew as I went down the stairs to exit the plane and an exciting feeling grew on me knowing that I've been back home after almost a year.
"Uh, it's colder than expected, don't you think?" Hailee shivered; following behind me as she gazed over the gloomy weather. "I'm freezing."
I sniffed the air and chuckled, "It's the natural breeze of Mullingar, love. Never really gets hot out here."
As my birthday was around the corner, I've thought it could've been an amazing idea to bring Hailee along for the first time. Besides being my girlfriend, it would've been a great opportunity to meet my family and celebrate my special day all at once.
"Can't really relate. Lived in Cali my whole life. This is new." Hailee huffed, adjusting her thin sweater from the wind.
"Oh, please. You'll be fine, trust me. It'll be fun." I wrapped my arm around her and placed a kiss on her forehead. "Now, come on, let's head to my mom's."
Within an hour, we found ourselves sitting in the sofa of my mother's home. The living room filled with my laughter as my mom told embarrassing stories throughout my childhood.
I did emphasized "my" because Hailee did seemed a bit off the entire time. It must have been the jetlag, so I didn't really point it out; I mean, we came from across the world, I'll be tired too.
I felt Hailee's hands wiggle out of mine before she stood up, excusing herself.
"I, um, I have to go to the bathroom. I'll be back." she spoke before awkwardly distancing from us.
Me and my mother sneakily eyed her as she disappeared down the hall and heard the bathroom door shut.
"So, what do you think?"
My mother adjusted her posture and looked at me, realizing what I meant.
"She's pretty." she then leaned on me, almost letting out a whisper as she spoked. "Do I bore her?"
I reddened at her assumption and laughed nervously.
"What? Course' not! M'just the jetlag! Trust me, she's incredible. Just tired." I mumbled out.
Our relationship the last year hadn't been the "best" to say. There's been a few up's and down's and not to include the separate careers we have, things have become distant and hectic, but I'm hoping this trip could make up for the lost time.
"Oh alright. Had me a little worried, love. My apologies." She smiled, taking a sip of her tea.
Not wanting to intense the awkward conversation, I immediately changed the subject.
"Erm, how's Greg and Denise doing now? How are the kiddos?"
I did become aware my brother was struggling with unemployment after getting fired from his previous job, making his wife, Denise take a role on working out of home herself.
Luckily, for me, having the opportunity to have so many connections, I was able to promote my older brother and got multiple offers for jobs and good pay; immediately getting him back on track with good hours.
"They're doing great! Greg might get promoted soon and Denise just recently got switched for her working hours. She is working mornings now from what I remember." My mom informed.
I furrowed my brows and gave a nod, "Reckon, thought she was at home with the boys now? How's that going then?"
"Dunno. Few months ago, they've mentioned hiring a babysitter. I'm sure it won't be for too long either. They just need someone to give the right care for the boys." She continued.
"You can't care for them?" I joked. "You're the grandma, mum! It's like taking care of me and Greg all over again!"
My mother laughed along with me and shook her head, "Oh, honey. Those days are gone. Finley is only a baby and I don't have the skills anymore for infants. I might see them on weekends."
I gave a small nod. "Right...so, they'll be with a babysitter now." I thought.
"Correct. Well, they already are. They did say they needed one by this week. I'm sure your brother and Denise have everything covered."
"Guessin' I can't pay a visit to the nephews soon then?" I wondered.
It did suck to not me able to see my family often. Especially, when I've never truly met my new nephew, Finley. So, my curiosity was off the roof to get to know the new champ of the family and see Theo again.
"Of course you can! I'm sure the babysitter will not mind. Or maybe pass by in the weekend! Friday maybe. I'm sure they'll be home by then." She recommended.
I scratched the back of my head.
"You're right. I was planning a visit today, but I'm extremely exhausted. I think I should head out soon, got lots to catch up from what I see." I slowly stood up from the sofa.
Within the moment, I can sense Hailee walking towards me, finally coming out the bathroom and noticed my gestures.
"Are we leaving already?"
I sighed, "Y-Yeah we are. Seems like you are tired from the plane ride, so we should head out. I'm getting tired too."
My mother noticed our actions and stood up along us, "Oh, you sure you guys wanna head out already? You don't want to stay the night here? It is quite a drive back to your-"
"S'alright mum. We actually left our bags at my place, but thank you for the offer." I forced out.
I actually would've loved for us to stay at my mom's house. There was always that extra room that she had organize for my stay just in case and for some reason it was so home-welcoming, but I wasn't alone on this trip.
Hailee did grow up pretty wealthy, so I truly didn't want to give her a half room, and small bed for her to sleep tonight. I thought it'll be embarrassing for me to pull that move for her, so it was easier to just stay at my small temporary apartment in Ireland.
Dating her felt like trying to impress someone everyday.
