Short Chapter - Kim Seungmin's POV
Throwback to the night when Chan and Liverra suddenly left the SA meeting
–
"Maddie, I think we should end this."
"About what ?"
"Our relationship. I don't think it's working anymore."
Long silence. I hated this so much, oh my God. Why did a break up have to be this dramatic? If they were going to stay quiet for an hour, then I'd have to hide up on this tree, in the night, and for an hour with the big ants ready to bite me.
Hey, It's Seungmin again, not in JJ's building but hanging on the tree. Nice. I was here for JJ's mission. Chan suddenly called me around 8 pm, telling me he was on his way to meet his girlfriend. I asked his permission to eavesdrop on what they were talking about, and he agreed. As proof, I recorded it too, and also in case Maddie did anything crazy. For this kind of systematic plan, Chan didn't seem to have completely lost himself, especially this concerned the safety of the girl he loved. He probably just realized how weird Maddie was.
"So this is your reward for me, Chan?"
"What do you mean?"
"After all the kindness, when I gave all my love to you, you do this to me? What did I do wrong? Or any girl got your attention?"
"It's not about that. But it's just— we both changed. I don't feel any connection in our relationship anymore."
Yep, we knew she would say that point. This was crazy, I never thought that humans could be so annoying. Humans were easily unstable. Someone who used to hate each other so much could turn into a partner for life and death. On the other hand, even couples who were in love before could get sick to the point of pushing each other away.
It was all because of human selfishness, don't you think? Selfish and lazy, wishing to own the world without any struggle. Endless complaining, begging for happiness they deserved every time they found any obstacle. Even with fights, mortal desires would never end. When they got what they wanted, they threw it away.
And from what I learned here, we needed to stop exaggerating someone's character. Love doesn't need to be with a perfect partner, in a perfect start, or a perfect relationship because no one is perfect after all. Maddie might be pretty, but her character didn't suit Chan. She drowned in her selfishness, feeling proud for thinking how perfect she was to the point she hated when any girl took her place.
By the way, I wasn't alone here. This recording was also connected to JJ's office witnessed live by Han Jisung and Enzo. And as most of you already knew, I knew a lot of people, but my mouths were locked. I opened my mouth if this really needed to be informed. Many people were reckless who tweet everywhere even though they only knew a little information. For me, knowing many things was not something to be proud of. Stress and overthinking often came to me. Sometimes, I hoped that I wasn't always faced with coincidences that made me know many things.
"You said no girl is nicer than me. I know I was the best, girls should look at me as a role model. You robbed all the hope and happiness I deserved, Chan !"
"I know, I'm such a jerk. That's why I let you go. You deserve someone better than me."
Pffft— what a template, Chief.
"Funny." I heard her chuckle. "Do you cheat on me? Oh— I know. I could see your sight to that new SA girl. You change since she's here. What do you see about her, huh? She isn't even pretty and look like b*tch—"
"Don't you dare talk bad about her!"
Oh no, this tone. The scary tone of him. But— I would say this one was scarier. I never heard him be this angry before. He cut her words just like that. War was just starting.
Maddie started to cry, not knowing if it's fake or not by the way, but with Chan's response showing how much he loved Liv, this could be dangerous. Liv had to take cover, especially when team JJ and all of us were not around. We never knew if Maddie could be one of the culprits.
"Didn't you hate Liv before?"
"Not anymore, Maddie. She's a good friend of my dad's friend. And this break up is not about her. This is about us."
Well, I could say Chan was true. Maddie was a sweet girl before. But as time went by, she acted weirdly by trying to be a perfect girl— some girls called her 'pick me', and trying hard to achieve the public's image as an angel. I– no, we wanted to tell Chan about this earlier but of course we couldn't. At least I was glad he realized this. Honestly, none of us liked Maddie as well. Moreover, her behavior during the meeting made me almost puke.
I honestly had a suspicion about her because I remembered Chan who was always 'lucky'. For example, several times getting lunch from her when he didn't bring lunch and hadn't even told her about it, asking the driver to pick him up because of his motorbike that Jeongin had just borrowed five minutes before, and so on. And the latest was, this afternoon, I received information from the cafe security guard that she deliberately took off her jacket and left it in her car with a 'strange' expression as if she knew that the meeting would be changed to indoors.
And also– why did the girl suddenly know about the beach which was close to Chan's wedding location?
Maybe hanging too long on the tree made me exaggerate, but honestly I felt like Maddie was like a fortune teller who knew what happened to Chan. Let's say it's just the possessive nature of a woman towards her man. But was there anything that happens to be this accurate? Even if she was secretly stalking Chan, wouldn't that be too reckless?
"Okay." Chan stood up while brushing his hair. It was code to me that he had ended the conversation and I could get off the tree after this. "Thank you for the time we have been through. Sorry I can't be a good man for you. Wish you happiness."
Without replying to Chan's answer, Maddie just snorted and left immediately. I saw her walk to the front gate of the restaurant and be picked up by his personal assistant and bodyguard. We were sure that she wouldn't destroy her self-esteem here for a long time, even though I was scared she probably would do something.
I climbed down the tree when Maddie's car was gone."Damn it! My body is itching!"
"Sorry, gonna pay for you after this." Chan tapped me on the shoulder. "Ah– finally. It feels good to let this weird thing go."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever. And what's your next plan ?"
"Two important things. First, I'm thinking about asking her to work together with us, with JJ. And the second is—"
"What ?"
"Take her on a date."
I sighed. "That's not important."
