Daichi and Coach Ukai had given Amaku the go ahead to practice with Bokuto, Akaashi and Kuroo. They assured her the team could handle a few hours without her, especially if she came back with new ideas to help them improve.
Needless to say, she was caught off guard when Tsukishima walked into the gym. She was sitting on the floor with her legs out in front of her, glaring up at him.
"Oya?" Akaashi noticed him first.
"Oya, oya?" Bokuto chorused.
"Oya, oya, oya?" Kuroo smirked.
Ignoring them, he spoke. "There's something I would like to ask you. Do you mind?"
"Oh, no!" Kuroo and Bokuto spoke at the same time.
"Will you two knock that off, it's weird." Amaku threw a plastic water bottle at the back of Bokuto's head.
"Ow!" He pouted.
"Um, okay then." Tsukishima tried not to let his amusement show. "You're on a team that's known for being pretty good, right? Even if you could get to nationals, it's difficult to win it all, right?"
"It's not impossible, jackass!" Bokuto exclaimed.
"Don't get all bent out of shape." Akaashi reasoned. "Just hear him out, okay?"
"I'm asking a sincere question here. What drives you guys to work so hard?" Amaku smiled at his question, but kept her head down. "Volleyball is only an extracurricular activity, is there any other benefit than being able to put it on your college application or something like that?"
"Just an extracurricular?" Bokuto said dramatically. "I might just punch you in the face."
"Dude! Maybe he's just more interested in his grades." Kuroo defended. "Not that you would know anything about that."
"What did you say? I've been getting better! I got a 47 on my trig test!" Bokuto argued as Amaku got to her feet.
"Should I say something, or?" Tsukishima asked as the captions continued to argue.
"Nah, this'll take a minute." Akaashi responded.
Amaku grabs Bokuto by his shoulders, shoving him to face Tsukishima. "He asked you a question, idiot."
"Hey, tall dude with the glasses." He remembered what he was going to say before he started arguing with Kuroo.
"It's Tsukishima." He said.
"Fine then, Tsuki-blablabla." He waved his hand at Amaku, who rolled her eyes. "Is this game fun to you?"
"No, not really." He admitted, thinking of all the running he had to do at the training camp already.
"Do you think that's maybe because you suck at it?" Bokuto said bluntly. "I'm a third year and I've gone to nationals, so I'm way better than you. I'm like two of you."
"I already know that." Tsukishima said.
"But, it was only until recently I felt like volleyball was fun." Bo admitted. "Amaku helped me get there." He nudged her, almost a little too hard. "It started when line shots became a liable option for me during games. Blockers were starting to catch on to my cross-court shot and making things difficult, so I got ticked. I met Amaku at a co-ed training camp, and she helped me work on my line shots. Then, at the next tournament, against the same blockers, I shot right through 'em, didn't even let them touch the ball."
Bokuto laughed at the memory. "It's all about having a special badass personal moment like that. Who cares about the future? As long as you have a chance at winning the next game, nothing else really matters, does it? You get hooked on the rush of beating the guy in front of you. There's nothing better than playing with 120% of your skill."
"Well yeah, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Even thought I know it may not apply to everybody. Little 'Maku's got a million of those, but I guess that comes with being the top female volleyball player in Japan." Bokuto says nonchalantly.
Amaku smacks him, a glare in her eyes. "Will you shut up, that was only for middle schoolers."
"So modest." Kuroo teased, snickering at Tsukishima's shocked expression.
"So anyway, when you say volleyball's only an extracurricular activity, I literally do not understand what you mean. That said, I don't necessarily think you're wrong, either. However, that moment ever does come to you, that's the moment you'll fall in love with volleyball." Bokuto finished, not waiting for the blonde's response. "Okay! I answered your question, so you owe me a few blocks."
"Yep, fair is fair after all." Kuroo dragged him into the gym, ignoring his protests.
"So, are you going to listen to me now?" Amaku asked as he walked by her.
"I would've listened to you a while ago if I knew you were the top female player in your age group last year." Tsukishima said, a weight being lifted off her shoulder the moment he spoke to her.
"There's plenty you don't know about me." She started to smirk, but it turned into a soft smile when she met his eye.
"Can you two stop flirting so I can teach skinny some things?" Kuroo smirked.
Amaku rolled her eyes, but let the caption take the lead for now. While he demonstrated finger and arm positioning, she chipped in every now and then with something helpful. She was thrilled that Tsukishima was finally determined to learn something, her eagerness evident as she spoke.
Before she went to bed, she apologized to the blonde briefly. He responded with a sarcastic remark, and it was as if they had never argued in the first place.
The next day, there was a noticeable difference in how Karasuno was playing. While they were still making mistakes, there was much less of them. Tsukishima was playing with more effort, too.
The only other problem, was with Kageyama and Hinata.
Amaku was worried. They hadn't spoken a word since they got to the camp, and the tension was showing on the court too. She couldn't believe she said it, but she had told Suga that she actually preferred when they would bicker all the time.
