As the fairies arrived at Alphea, it was already past curfew. They exchanged nervous glances, realising they were in for a scolding if they were caught sneaking in after hours.
"We're so in trouble," Carissa murmured as they attempted to navigate the courtyard without drawing attention to themselves.
"You've got that right," a voice intoned, freezing them in their tracks. A spotlight illuminated the sneaking girls, revealing the headmistress and her assistant emerging from the shadows. "It's the first day of school, and you're already breaking the rules."
"We are sorry, Headmistress. It wasn't entirely our fault," Crystal interjected.
"Whose fault then? You were the ones who disobeyed the school rules," the headmistress reprimanded, her tone stern.
"We were held back by witches," Artemisia explained.
"Witches?" the headmistress responded, her assistant gasping in surprise. "You know that fighting with students from other schools is prohibited."
"They started it," Danielle interjected, a hint of defiance in her tone, causing the headmistress to sigh.
"I suppose I could let you off with a warning but remember to stay away from the witches of Cloud Tower!" The headmistress snapped her fingers, and the spotlight dimmed.
"To your dorms now; school starts tomorrow," she instructed as she walked away in the other direction.
"Wow, she totally let us off," Crystal remarked with a goofy smile. "She's so cool."
"Yes, my grandmother is super chill," Lithia added, causing everyone to stop and turn to her.
"Grandmother?" Carissa echoed in surprise. As they made their way back to their dorm, Danielle couldn't help but notice that Luna was unusually quiet.
"Is everything alright, Luna?" Danielle asked, concern lacing her voice as they entered their shared room.
Luna hesitated for a moment before responding, "Yeah, I'm fine. Just thinking about everything that happened today."
"You sure? You seemed a bit off ever since our encounter with the witches," Danielle pressed gently, giving Luna a reassuring smile.
Luna nodded slowly, offering a faint smile in return. "I guess I'm just not used to all these magical dealings yet. It's a lot to take in."
"I understand," Danielle replied sympathetically, giving Luna's shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "But you handled yourself admirably out there. You're a natural."
Luna let out a dry chuckle. "Really? I almost turned you guys blind," she quipped, her tone laced with self-deprecation.
Danielle laughed, shaking her head. "Well, let's just say it was an unexpected twist in our day. But hey, it worked for our advantage, didn't it?"
Luna smiled, feeling a bit lighter at Danielle's reassurance. "Yeah, I guess it did. Thanks, Danielle. I appreciate it."
"Anytime," Danielle said warmly, "and if you ever need to talk about anything, I'm here for you."
"Thanks, Danielle. That means a lot," Luna replied gratefully, her spirits lifting slightly at Danielle's support.
With a nod of understanding, they got ready for bed to recharge for the eventful day ahead.
