"Jamie, I'm sorry honey, but you gotta Put them back" Nathan, sighed softly towards our daughter as she handed me the packet of sweets excitedly. She was toddling around the store on her baby leash as I waddled along with Nate who was holding her baby reigns tightly in his hand, she'd very recently developed a horrible habit of running off. I awed mentally at Nathan's gentle-ness as one of my hands absent-mindedly rubbed my stomach
Liula sat in the shopping trolley with her face in her stuffed animal and her big headphones on, rocking gently as I leaned against the trolly handle for support.
Nate came up to me and walked next to me with his hand around my waist when our daughter wasn't pulling him in a thousand different directions, he pecked my cheek before he looked back at Jamie
"But- but why?!" Her bottom lip wobbled and I shot him a look. We both knew she would screech this store down if we didn't give her a reason or a replacement soon, but we had been trying to not give into her guilt tripping.
"Your mommy is having the little baby - your very own brother - very very soon, so we need to save up so we can buy the baby, Liula and you all the candy you want!" He smiled as he pretended to compromise to our daughter as he was kneeling down to her level and gently pinched her nose making her smile.
She let out a high pitched giggle and nodded, running to put them back on the shelf before coming up to me, kissing her hand and slapping my growing stomach - which was her way of saying hello to her soon-to-be baby brother - before demanding in a whisper directed to my stomach that the little unborn baby be nice to her or she would do what she does to her Barbie's to him. A forceful kick from inside made me stifle a grunt.
"We are raising a psychopath" Nathan muttered and I laughed. We really were. I was glad she accepted his reasoning though. We weren't poor, but we absolutely couldn't afford everything on planet earth. she has already started becoming spoiled and we can't be spending obscene amounts on sweets for her, our money isn't unlimited. But I liked it like that, it meant I felt that I could both contribute to the income and it was an even sweeter reward when I achieved a saving goal.
We passed the ice cream aisle and I looked at Nate with pleading eyes of my own.
"We have no room in the freezer-"
"You have to feed me, you can't just leave me and your son to starve" I rolled my eyes playfully with a laugh before he grabbed the ice cream, I kissed his cheek in thanks as he scanned and placed it in the bag before Jamie saw and begged for it. Liula just looked up at us before looking around anxiously and stuffed her face back into her bear and rocking again.
"Jamie?" I asked when I noticed our child wasn't with us and panic quickly gripped me. Nate knew everything about my past. He knew William did some horrible things, he new my exes were involved in dangerous stuff, and he still loved me. But I would never forgive myself if Jamie had been kidnapped because I was distracted.
