Continuing from 'Dalek - Part I'

BY THE TIME THEY GOT TO HIS WORKSHOP, LILY AND ROSE LEARNED THAT 'ENGLISH' WAS ACTUALLY NAMED ADAM MITCHELL and he's been working for Henry Van Statten for the last couple of years. When they were left alone in the room, now just him and the sisters, he started bustling about and cleaned up some nearby trinkets. "Sorry about the mess." He apologized. "Mister Van Statten sort of lets me do my own thing, so long as I deliver the goods." Rose was examining the shelves of items around, taking off her jacket and putting it aside. When Lily, who was on the other side of his work desk, caught Adam's eyes she saw he was holding out a metal object towards her. "What do you think that is?"

Lily turned it over in her hands. "Um," It was only about an inch thick and looked like a regular piece of scrap metal. "Just a lump of metal?"

"Yeah, but I think, well," He slowly took it back from her and made sure to make eye contact with her as he did. "I'm almost certain, it's from the hull of a spacecraft." Lily thought it to be adorable how amazed he was by it. "The thing is, it's all true." He leaned forward over his work desk, closer to Lily, and spoke in a hushed but amazed tone. "Everything the United Nations tries to keep quiet, spacecraft, aliens, visitors to Earth. They really exist!"

"Wow, that's," She looked to her side at Rose who watched them with a smile she was hiding behind by chewing her thumb. Back to Adam, who hadn't looked away from her, she forced an equally shocked grin. "Completely amazing."

"I know it sounds incredible, but," He rests his forearms on the tabletop. "I honestly believe the whole universe is just teeming with life.
"I'm gobsmacked," Rose put herself into the conversation. "And you do what, sit here and catalog it?"

Adam kept looking into Lily's eyes- like he was cataloging the shades of green in her iris'. "Best job in the world."

Lily started to feel uneasy with the attention she was receiving from him. But she didn't let either of them know as she'd hate to make him uncomfortable. "Imagine if you could get out there." She smiled brightly at him. "Travel amongst the stars and see it for real."

Adam beamed. "Yeah, I'd give anything." Then something passed over his eyes that made him pull away and shake his head. "I don't think it's ever going to happen. Not in our lifetimes."

"Oh, you never know," Rose said, taking a seat on a nearby stool. "What about all those people who say they've been inside of spaceships and things and talked to aliens?"

Adam wasted no time in his response. "I think they're nutters."

Lily and Rose gave each other a look and then burst out laughing. "Yeah, us too." Rose sighed, giving the room one more look. "So, how'd you end up here?"

Adam shrugged and took a sip out of his mug. "Van Statten has agents all over the world looking for geniuses to recruit."

Lily couldn't help but roll her eyes at the irony and walked around his desk to now stand at his side. Rose, still sitting on the stool, lightly nudged her with her foot as Lily passed. "Of course, you're a genius."

Adam blushed. "Sorry, but yeah. I can't help it. I was born clever." He gravitated closer to her. "When I was eight, I logged onto the US Defence System." She knew he was trying to impress her and that's why Lily let him get closer- not wanting his ego to get bruised. "Nearly caused World War Three." He laughed. "Well, you should've been there just to see them running about. Fantastic!"

"Gee," Lily smiled fondly as she picked at the edge of the desk. "You sound like the Doctor."

"Are you and him?" He left that question open for an answer.
