WHILE LILY AND THE DALEK TRAVELED UP THE LIFT TO THE TOP LEVEL SHE TRIED AGAIN TO REASON WITH IT. "I'm begging you to not kill anyone else. You didn't kill me." She reminded it.

"But why not?" The Dalek asked in a way that sounded desperate. "Why are you alive? My function is to kill. What am I? What am I?"

Lily asked. "What do you want that will make you stop?"

There was a brief silence before he answered. "Freedom."

The lift doors opened and Lily followed the Dalek out onto the top level of the building. It raised its gun and blasted a gaping hole in the roof- Lily had to duck to avoid the falling debris. The light shone through onto her face. "You're out." Lily praised. "You made it." She smiled at the warmth on her skin. "I never thought I'd feel sunlight again."

"How does it feel?" The middle part of the Dalek's armor opened up. Lily moved in front of it to better examine the true creature- a one-eyed mutant stretched its tentacle to the stream of sunlight, yearning to feel it.

"Get out of my way, Lily!" Lily turned and was surprised to find the Doctor at the other end of the corridor, holding a large gun. "Get out of the way now!"

He had a crazed look in his eye but Lily wasn't scared. "No," She said calmly. "I won't let you do this."

The Doctor sneered. "That thing killed hundreds of people!"

Lily shook her head and frowned- looking down at the weapon the Doctor held. "It's not the one pointing the gun at me."

He blinked and started to lower the gun, leaving it at his side. "I've got to do this. I've got to end it. You've seen my memories, Lily. Don't you remember?" He took a step closer and Lily hurt for him when she could better see the sorrow in his eyes. The same sorrow that matched the tone in his voice. "The Daleks destroyed my home- my people. I've got nothing left."

Lily's tried not to feel offended when she heard him say that. This wasn't about her. "But this Dalek has to be different. Look at it." She moved more to the side so the Doctor could get a better view of the Dalek basking in the sunlight. "All it wants is the sunlight."

The Doctor shuffled closer. "But, it can't."

"It couldn't kill me, Doctor," Lily explained to him as easygoing as she could. "It probably couldn't even kill Van Statten- it's changing!"

"He's not even the last of the Dalek." The Doctor kept his distance as he spoke to the alien over Lily's shoulder. "Lily did more than regenerate you." He explained to it. "You've absorbed her DNA. You're mutating."

"Into wait?" It asked.

"Something new. I'm sorry."

Lily frowned and turned back to the Dalek understanding what the Doctor's words meant.

"I can feel so many ideas." It cried. "So much darkness. Lily," Lily jumped slightly at the urgency with which he said her name. "give me orders. Order me to die."

Lily's voice cracked. "I can't."

"This is not life. This is sickness. I shall not be like you. Order my destruction! Obey! Obey! Obey!"

Lily swallowed, accepting what she had to do for it. "Do it."

"Are you frightened, Lily Carter?" It asked her.

Lily nodded and felt a single tear run down her cheek. "I am."

"So am I." It confessed. Lily felt the Doctor lace his fingers with hers and, without her looking, pulled her away from the Dalek. "Exterminate." Both at a safe distance they witnessed the Dalek close the hatch and levitate into the air. The spheres of his lower body spread out around it and created a force field where it ultimately imploded into nothingness.
